Moscow terror attack – injured suspects appear in court accused of killing 137 people | BBC News

Published

on

Russia has charged four men it says attacked a Moscow concert hall and killed at least 137 people.

Three were marched blindfolded into a Moscow court. A fourth appeared in a wheelchair. All were charged with committing an act of terrorism.

The Islamic State group, or IS, said it carried out Friday’s atrocity at Crocus City Hall, and posted video which appeared to support the claim.

The accused were named as Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, Saidakrami Murodali Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni and Muhammadsobir Fayzov. Masked police brought them into Basmanny district court in the Russian capital. All the men appeared to be injured.

Russian officials have claimed that Ukraine was involved in the attack without producing any evidence. Kyiv said the claim was “absurd”.

Explosions and gunfire as armed groups launch co-ordinated attacks across Mali | BBC News

Published

on

Explosions and sustained gunfire have been reported in Mali’s capital, Bamako, as armed groups launch apparently co-ordinated attacks across the country.

The military said in a statement on Saturday that “fighting is ongoing”, adding “our defence and security forces are currently engaged in repelling the attackers”.

Witnesses have told news agency Reuters of explosions and gunfire around Kati, home to a major military base outside the capital. Soldiers have been deployed to block off roads in the area.

There are also reports of attacks in Gao and Kidal in the north, and Sevare in central Mali, in what one analyst described as the largest jihadist attack in years.

US President Donald Trump said he will extend the ceasefire with Iran until talks between the two countries have progressed.

He also said the blockade of Iranian ports will also continue until Tehran presents a “unified proposal”.

The status of the US-Iran talks had been unclear with the current ceasefire previously due to expire this week.

The BBC’s chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet is reporting from Tehran on condition that none of her material is used on the BBC’s Persian Service. These restrictions apply to all international media organisations operating in Iran.

Antisemitic attacks: Are teenagers being recruited to firebomb Jewish sites? | BBC News

Published

on

A series of antisemitic attacks have targeted Jewish sites across the UK – from petrol bombs thrown at synagogues to Jewish charity ambulances set on fire.

A group named Harakat Ashab al‑Yamin al‑Islamia has claimed responsibility online. Counter‑terrorism police are now investigating potential links to Iran. But what do we know about who’s behind this seemingly co-ordinated effort?

This investigation looks at why many of those charged over the attacks are teenagers, and asks if foreign states are paying local criminals to carry them out.

A man has been charged with attempting to assassinate US President Donald Trump after a shooting occurred during the White House correspondents’ dinner.

Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from California, allegedly crossed multiple state lines in an attempt to assassinate the president, according to federal prosecutor Jocelyn Ballantine.

In an interview after the shooting, Trump said he was “not worried” during the shooting – although authorities believe the president and other senior government figures were targets.
