Rwanda: ‘Biggest overhaul of Britain’s immigration system in decades’ says Priti Patel

Published

on

British interior minister Priti Patel said on Thursday (April 14) part of the reason the government had chosen Rwanda for an agreement to resettle illegal migrants was because it had a history of resettling refugees in “a skilled way”.

Anyone who had arrived in Britain illegally since Jan. 1 could now be relocated to Rwanda, in central Africa, which would disrupt the business model of people-smuggling gangs, Boris Johnson announced in Kent on Thursday.

Patel was in Kigali, Rwanda, on Thursday to sign the partnership agreement and presented it at a joint news conference with Rwandan Foreign Minister Vincent Biruta.

Patel said it was the biggest overhaul of Britain’s immigration system in decades.

The partnership would offer migrants opportunities to build new lives but at the same time benefit Rwanda’s development, Biruta said.

The British government said it would contribute an initial 120 million pounds ($157.55 million) to the partnership.
