Government to protect free speech in university

Published

By

The Government has announced a new complaints system to make it easier to report universities that fail to protect free speech.

The Office for Students says it will run a “first-of-its-kind” scheme for university members to raise concerns, with the regulator able to recommend that institutions review decisions, pay compensation or improve their processes.

From next April, new conditions of registration will mean the OfS can fine universities for breaches of their duties under the Freedom of Speech Act.

Those fines could reach 500-thousand pounds, or 2% of their income, and in serious cases universities could be deregistered, risking loss of public funding.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under fire as critics react to reports that he plans to lead Labour into the next general election. Broadcaster Ben Leo doesn’t hold back, mocking the situation as “a circus” and questioning whether Starmer’s leadership is resonating with voters. As speculation builds around Labour’s electoral strategy, the political temperature continues to rise.

Political commentator Hilary Fordwich delivers a scathing assessment of Starmer’s time in office, arguing that his leadership has reinforced a narrative of a country in decline. With public confidence, party unity, and economic pressures all in focus, critics are increasingly vocal about whether Labour can secure victory at the next election under his leadership.

Meanwhile, reports of a potential cabinet reshuffle have added another layer of intrigue. Benedict Spence reacts to speculation that Chancellor Rachel Reeves could be removed, suggesting she may become a political “scapegoat.”
