US presidential election: What is Super Tuesday and why is it important? | BBC News
Super Tuesday – the day when most US states choose their candidates for president, has arrived.
Nominating contests will be held in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and the US territory of American Samoa.
It will likely be the biggest day so far in the 2024 race for the White House, and should offer a glimpse of Joe Biden and Donald Trump’s strengths and potential weaknesses ahead of November’s election.
Following a Supreme Court ruling, Trump remains on the ballot in Colorado and Maine, despite both states trying to disqualify him on the grounds of allegedly inciting insurrection.

Andy Burnham has reacted to Keir Starmer’s resignation, and confirmed that he will try to replace him as Labour leader and prime minister.
“His decision marks the beginning of a transition and it is important that this process is conducted in an orderly and responsible way. I will put myself forward as part of this process”, Burnham said on social media.
While Starmer had been vowing to fight any leadership challenge, the tone shifted after Andy Burnham beat Reform UK in the Makerfield by-election on Thursday, and he announced his resignation on Monday morning.
Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said he will back Burnham’s bid.

Direct talks between the US and Iran are set to begin in Switzerland despite the Iranian military saying it has closed the Strait of Hormuz again over Israel’s attacks on southern Lebanon.
Iran also cited a breach of its agreement with the US to end the war as a reason for the closure.
However, the US military has said “traffic continues to flow” in the strait.
