Now, let’s analyse the participation of retail investors in the equity and derivatives markets. While the number of retail traders in the cash market has fluctuated over the years, there has been consistent growth in the options market.

The turnover in options trading has seen substantial year-on-year growth, indicating sustained interest in this segment and SEBI’s regulatory changes, such as the peak margin rule and upfront collection of margin, have aimed to mitigate risks associated with high-leverage trading and provide more transparency to traders.

Despite the challenges and risks involved, options trading continues to attract traders, fueled by the allure of quick profits. However, it’s essential for traders to understand the risks and make informed decisions.

SEBI’s efforts to enhance risk disclosure and regulate the derivatives market have contributed to a more transparent and informed trading environment.

While option trading faces challenges and scrutiny, it remains a significant segment of the stock market. Trader education and regulatory oversight play crucial roles in ensuring a sustainable and profitable trading environment.
