Is Option Trading Dying a slow DEATH? | Options Vs Equity Turnover Trends
Is option trading losing its charm among traders? Has SEBI’s report on option traders facing losses affected the interest in options trading? Is option buying on the decline?
According to a report by NSE in November 2023, around 11 million retail investors traded in equity cash, and 3.6 million traded in equity options. Are these numbers decreasing over the past few years, or are there new trends emerging?
In this video, we’ll explore the changing interest of retail traders in equity cash and options markets, SEBI’s regulations affecting options traders, and how brokers are benefiting from these changes.
Let’s see some interesting insights about the monthly premium turnover of option traders in India: Almost half of the option traders have a turnover of less than ₹1 lakh, Only about 3.6% of traders have a turnover of ₹1 crore or more and The turnover of unique investors in both cash and options markets varies across different ranges, indicating diverse participation levels.
The number of active demat accounts surged significantly from FY20 to FY22 but stabilised in the past two years, indicating a phase of consolidation in the market.
This stability might be attributed to various factors, including the impact of COVID-19 on market participation and the increased focus on trader education.
Now, let’s analyse the participation of retail investors in the equity and derivatives markets. While the number of retail traders in the cash market has fluctuated over the years, there has been consistent growth in the options market.
The turnover in options trading has seen substantial year-on-year growth, indicating sustained interest in this segment and SEBI’s regulatory changes, such as the peak margin rule and upfront collection of margin, have aimed to mitigate risks associated with high-leverage trading and provide more transparency to traders.
Despite the challenges and risks involved, options trading continues to attract traders, fueled by the allure of quick profits. However, it’s essential for traders to understand the risks and make informed decisions.
SEBI’s efforts to enhance risk disclosure and regulate the derivatives market have contributed to a more transparent and informed trading environment.
While option trading faces challenges and scrutiny, it remains a significant segment of the stock market. Trader education and regulatory oversight play crucial roles in ensuring a sustainable and profitable trading environment.
