England lockdown “may last longer than 4 weeks” says government – BBC News
England’s new national lockdown could last longer that its scheduled end date of 2nd December, the government has admitted.
The cabinet minister Michael Gove said ministers will be “guided by the facts” and the government wanted to get the coronavirus reproduction rate below the critical level of 1.
The new lockdown was prompted by sharp rises in infection rates — and that would have to be reversed in order for restrictions to be eased.

The Iran War Today looks at tit for tat US and Iranian strikes in the Gulf region as the conflict reaches its 99th day.
The Lebanese army says several of its troops have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on a military vehicle in the south of the country.
And the row has spilled over onto the World Cup. Iran has accused the US of discriminatory treatment and of violating its obligations as a World Cup host for refusing visas to some of its football team’s delegation.

US President Donald Trump tells Israel and Iran to stop “shooting”, after the countries attacked each other’s territory for the first time since the April ceasefire.
Israel carried out air strikes in western and central Iran, after Iran fired missiles at northern Israel.
Iran said it’s “the beginning of a full week of continuous strikes” – it launched its attacks after Israel carried out air strikes on Beirut in Lebanon on Sunday.
The Israeli military said those strikes, on Hezbollah targets in the city’s southern suburbs, were a response to Hezbollah firing rockets at Israel.

Sir Keir Starmer has accused tech billionaire Elon Musk of “trying to whip up division” over the murder of Henry Nowak.
There were violent protests in Southampton following the release of bodycam footage showing police handcuffing 18-year-old Nowak as he lay dying. His killer Vickrum Digwa had claimed he had been the victim of a racist attack.
The footage of Nowak’s final moments has prompted a wave of political reaction in the UK, as well as X owner Musk criticising the police treatment of the teenager.
