Coronavirus: concern over deaths in care homes – govt promises more tests – BBC News

Published

on

The government has promised more testing for coronavirus in care homes in England after serious concerns about the number of deaths of residents. Ministers have promised testing for both residents and staff and for anyone being discharged from hospital to a care home. But there are questions about how realistic the proposals are, given the slow progress towards meeting the target of 100,000 coronavirus tests each day in the NHS. Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reports from Health Editor Hugh Pym and Social Affairs Correspondent Alison Holt.

Fukushima: The nuclear disaster that shook the world – BBC News

Published

on

On March 11th 2011, Japan’s most powerful earthquake on record triggered a tsunami, which then caused a meltdown at a nuclear power plant.
It wiped entire towns off the map and forced Fukushima’s residents from their homes as radiation leaked from the plant. The government estimates the disaster could cost nearly $200bn, and the clean-up may take until 2051.
Today the prefecture of Fukushima is still dealing with the aftermath of the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. What happened that day, and what was it like for the people who lived through it?
The BBC’s Tui McLean explains how the triple disaster unfolded.

At least 29 Palestinians killed in airstrike on camp for displaced people | BBC News

All civilians in Gaza City are being told to leave their homes and head south. The Israeli army has dropped thousands of leaflets telling more than a quarter of a million people that the area remains a dangerous combat zone.

The UN has said it is deeply concerned about the evacuation orders being given. It is the second time since the war began that Gaza City as a whole has been asked to evacuate.

Further south at least 29 Palestinians have been killed and dozens more wounded in an Israeli airstrike on a camp for displaced people.

Gaza’s Hams-run health ministry says the strike was next to the gates of a school east of the city of Khan Younis.

The Israeli military said it had used “precise munition” to target a “terrorist from Hamas’ military wing” who had taken part in the 7 October attack on Israel. It said it was “looking into the reports that civilians were harmed” adjacent to the school.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Fergal Keane.

Children’s hospital hit as Russian airstrikes kill dozens in Ukraine | BBC News

Published

on

A children’s hospital in Kyiv has been largely destroyed after Russia launched a wave of missile strikes against cities across Ukraine.

The Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital – Ukraine’s biggest paediatrics facility – sustained major damage in the explosion.

Thirty-six people were killed and 140 people were injured in the airstrikes, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office. They said more than 40 missiles of different types had hit buildings and infrastructure in cities including Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

Russia has denied targeting the hospital, saying it was hit by a Ukrainian air defence missile. But Ukraine says it found fragments of a Russian cruise missile at the scene.

Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by James Waterhouse, Steve Rosenberg and Jonathan Beale.
