UK introduces new travel rules to combat Omicron Covid variant – BBC News

Travellers heading to the UK will now have to take a test before their departure in an effort to limit spread of the virus, the government has said.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the tightened requirements would come into force from 04:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Everyone aged 12 and over will be required to take a pre-departure test a maximum of 48 hours before leaving.

Currently people only need to self-isolate until they test negative within two days of arriving.

Serial sex offender Simon Levy sentenced for murders of two women and rape of third | BBC News

Serial sex offender Simon Levy – who killed two women and raped a third while on bail for other offences – has been sentenced to a whole life jail term.

Levy was found guilty last week of murdering Carmenza Valencia-Trujillo and Sheryl Wilkins in 2025, as well as the violent rape of a third woman.

Levy is a registered sex offender and was being monitored by police at the time of the attacks.

Desperate search for survivors as 240 confirmed dead in Colombia earthquake | BBC News

Rescue workers in Colombia are working against the clock to free survivors trapped in buildings and under rubble following Monday’s powerful earthquake.

More than 240 people have been confirmed dead – most in the cities of Cali and Pereira.

The magnitude 7.4 quake struck at 07:34 local time and was felt across an enormous area, stretching for hundreds of miles across western Colombia – with fresh aftershocks still being felt the following day.

A state of emergency has been declared by President Abelardo de la Espriella. Giving an update from Pereira, one of the worst hit cities, President Espriella said as well as those killed, thousands had been injured, and hundreds remain missing.
