Rebecca Nymal and Garkouth Puok Thiep fled conflict in southern Sudan, and found sanctuary in the world’s largest refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya. Though neither had any running experience, they were given a chance by former world record holder Tegla Loroupe to earn selection for the Team of Refugee Olympic Athletes. For the past few months, they have been training with 28 other runners in the famous Ngong Hills training area to find out if they will qualify. ROA was set up by the International Olympic Committee in recognition of the worldwide refugee crisis.

At least 13 killed in large-scale Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv | BBC News

Published

on

Russian forces have launched a major drone and missile attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv overnight, killing at least 13 people, officials said.

Several neighbourhoods were evacuated as strikes rocked buildings throughout the city, hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned Russia was preparing for a “massive” attack.

Children were among the “significant number” of casualties, Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration, said. “The enemy is once again deliberately targeting residential areas and killing civilians,” he said early on Thursday.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed it targeted energy facilities in response to recent Ukrainian strikes.

on

Russian forces have launched what Kyiv’s mayor described as the “most massive” attack on the Ukrainian capital since the start of the full-scale invasion, killing at least 20 people and injuring around 90.

Ukraine said Russia fired hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles overnight, striking residential areas across the city.

Moscow said it had targeted military facilities in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian infrastructure.

The assault comes as Ukraine renews calls for more air defence support from its allies amid intensified Russian strikes.
