Inside Italy’s biggest mafia trial in decades – BBC News

Published

on

Members of Italy’s most powerful are facing charges including murder, extortion and drug-trafficking, in a trial that began two years ago.

In the trial of its kind since the 1980s, more than 330 suspects in the ‘Ndrangheta group have been testifying and 70 of them have been convicted.

The group, based in the southern region of Calabria, dominates the global cocaine market and has an estimated annual turnover of around $60bn (£49bn).

Nicola Gratteri, the prosecutor leading the country’s fight against organised crime, said convicting the group would create “breathing space” for the community.

Negotiators for the US and Iran have agreed a framework of a deal that would extend their ceasefire for 60 days and launch negotiations on the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, US sources say.

The agreement comes amid continued strikes and accusations of ceasefire violations, with tensions still high across the region.

Talks are also said to include potential changes to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.

Trump and Iran reach tentative deal | Global News Podcast

Published

on

More than three months after the US and Israel first began their war with Iran, Washington and Tehran have reached an initial agreement to bring about a more long-term end to hostilities.

US President Donald Trump has said it paves the way for what he called the “toll-free” opening of the Strait of Hormuz. He called on ships to start their engines and “let the oil flow”.

The full text of the deal has not yet been released. Pakistani mediators say the agreement will be officially signed in Switzerland on Friday 19 June.

Our US State Department correspondent Tom Bateman tells us that President Trump and Iranian officials are already giving different accounts of what’s been agreed.
