Coronavirus: oil price collapses as demand falls further – BBC News

Published

on

The price of oil has plunged further as the coronavirus pandemic leads to falls in demand around the world. In the United States some oil prices turned negative – with oil producers in effect paying buyers to take supplies.

Meanwhile some countries are continuing to ease the lockdowns they put in place due to the pandemic. New Zealand is relaxing rules on local travel, following some easing of coronavirus restrictions in Germany and Denmark.

In the UK Boris Johnson is said to be very wary of relaxing restrictions too soon due to concerns it could lead to a second wave of coronavirus infections. The Prime Minister is continuing his recovery from the virus at Chequers, his country residence.

In the United States protesters have taken to the streets demanding an end to the lockdown. The US is feeling the economic effects of the pandemic, with unemployment soaring – more than 22 million Americans have put in new claims for benefits in the last month.

Huw Edwards presents News at Ten reports from Business Correspondent Michelle Fleury, Science Editor David Shukman, Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg and North America Editor Jon Sopel.

'You don't mix oil and water to make pace; the oil may burn but only on the surface, after it completely burns, the oil disappears but the water stays' ( like a magic trick) physics is beautiful when you understand it, science makes sense when you keep practicing… yet for so many logic is missing

People were freaking out when there were 1000s of cases in the country, now there are well over a 100 thousand with 10s of thousands dead and people are looking at reopening everything.
Closing down with thousands infected – reopening with hundreds of thousands infected
One doesn't need to be a nobel price laureate in the field of epidemiology to know that this idea is desperate and will equate to many more deaths.

I feel Trump has really failed his people. He need to assist them financially for them not to go into these scared frenzies. He needs to reassure them and show he cares for their well being. I see nothing, he does nothing, but there are those who are totally devoted to this guy.

BP’s profits for the first three months of the year have more than doubled following a surge in oil prices since the beginning of the Iran war.

US President Donald Trump claims that Iran has told the US it is in a state of “collapse” and would like the US to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, a superyacht linked to one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s key allies has sailed through the strait, despite the ongoing blockade of the critical shipping channel.

Was a secret US mission behind the F-15E jet downed in Iran? | The Security Brief

Published

on

Why was the F-15E so deep inside Iran?

What was going on close to Isfahan, where a large amount of Iran’s enriched uranium was last believed to be held?

There are reports that 100 US Special Forces operators were flown there.
There is some speculation that it may have been part of a secret operation to grab the uranium, that came unstuck when the jet was downed.

Exactly what happened is unclear, but there is enough footage circulating online to raise real questions about the initial account of what was going on.

The Security Brief takes a closer look at that dramatic rescue operation – and some of the questions that have arisen since.
