Will online abuse increase after English women’s football’s record deal? – BBC News
The Women’s Super League has signed a broadcast deal with the BBC and Sky earlier this year – the largest agreement in women’s football to date.
Anita Asante, who plays for Aston Villa, says the deal is a ‘huge opportunity to grow the sport’.
But she fears the increased exposure and boost to the profile of players may result in more online abuse, particularly towards non-white players.
Asante, who has experienced racist abuse from hostile crowds and on social media, says she worries whether players who haven’t been exposed to it before can ‘manage’ the potential abuse.
A report by the Professional Footballers Association has found that there has been a 48% increase in un-moderated racist online abuse in the second half of the 2020/21 football season.

There is continuing criticism from Catholics around the world, as US President Donald Trump’s feud with Pope Leo escalates. Trump said Pope Leo XIV was “weak”, and posted an AI-generated image of himself on Truth Social, which many people believe depicted him as Jesus.
The image, which has now been deleted, showed Trump appearing to heal a sick man in a hospital bed. He said it showed him as a doctor. The image post came hours after the president posted a lengthy message criticising the pontiff, who is a vocal critic of the US and Israeli military operation in Iran.
Italy’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, has said Donald Trump’s remarks are ”unacceptable”. Meloni, who is Catholic and heads a right-wing coalition government, is a close ally of Trump.
Pope Leo said that he has “no fear” of the Trump administration. There are more than 70 million Catholics in the US – many of whom are swing voters. We ask the BBC’s religion editor, Aleem Maqbool, if Donald Trump’s row with the pope has dealt lasting damage to his Catholic support.

A shadow industry of law firms and advisers is charging thousands of pounds to help migrants pretend to be gay in order to stay in the UK, the BBC has found.
In the first part of a major undercover investigation, we reveal how migrants whose visas are due to run out are being given fake cover stories and instructed in how to obtain fabricated evidence, including supporting letters, photographs and medical reports.
They then apply for asylum claiming to be gay and in fear for their lives if they return to Pakistan or Bangladesh.
In response to our findings, the Home Office said: “Anyone found trying to exploit the system will face the full force of the law, including removal from the UK.”

US Vice President JD Vance has arrived in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad alongside President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and special adviser Jared Kushner and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff for peace talks with Iran.
Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who has recently emerged as a prominent government figure, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in the middle of the night ahead of the talks.
Both the sides were greeted by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Pakistan’s military chief Asim Munir. The country is a key mediator between the two warring nations, and played a part in securing a fragile two-week ceasefire.

The Artemis II crew have completed their 10-day mission around the Moon and are preparing to splash down on Earth.
They are expected to arrive off the coast of San Diego at 20:07 eastern US time on Friday 10 April (01:07 BST on Saturday).
The splashdown sequence takes roughly 42 minutes to complete and is considered the most dangerous part of the Artemis II mission, with the Orion capsule enduring temperatures of nearly 2,760C.

the black population of the UK is around 3.5% – yet every night on BBC news just about every face I see is black – reporters, newsreaders – in schools, police, on the street, on the tube – there's barely a white face anywhere – dont believe me ? well just watch with an open mind. what is the point of women's football? men are not interested – women are not interested – yet we have no choice but to contribute via the BBC licence fee for the ultra-WOKE PC BBC coverage of a sport that almost nobody watches – more people watch curling. Played for 20 years in Ice Hockey premierships. Back in the day when it was not so welcomed. We had constant abuse from male counterparts as well as assumptions we were all gay ( many of us were not, but even if that was the case…??!!!) so, this is nothing new. We never got « training » about prejudice or teams of people protecting us from it. We got beaten up outside the rink, our stuff got stolen from the lockeroom, and our ice time shorten by the never leaving male teams using it before us….It carried on for years….But we raised above it. We carried on with our heads high. It eventually stopped bit by bit. The more you talk about it, the more you are going to provoke people. Just decide what you want to do with your life and do not let haters control your choice. Move on!!!!!
