Will online abuse increase after English women’s football’s record deal? – BBC News
The Women’s Super League has signed a broadcast deal with the BBC and Sky earlier this year – the largest agreement in women’s football to date.
Anita Asante, who plays for Aston Villa, says the deal is a ‘huge opportunity to grow the sport’.
But she fears the increased exposure and boost to the profile of players may result in more online abuse, particularly towards non-white players.
Asante, who has experienced racist abuse from hostile crowds and on social media, says she worries whether players who haven’t been exposed to it before can ‘manage’ the potential abuse.
A report by the Professional Footballers Association has found that there has been a 48% increase in un-moderated racist online abuse in the second half of the 2020/21 football season.

Airstrikes hit Kuwait airport – 1 dead and 60 injured – Iran and US launch more attacks | BBC News
One person has been killed and more than 60 injured in strikes on Kuwait’s international airport.
Kuwait’s defence ministry spokesman blamed Iran, saying drones had attacked the airport, and called it “criminal Iranian aggression”.
Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) denied responsibility for the attacks, claiming the damage was caused by an error from a US missile interceptor.
US Central Command said this was false and also accused Iran in targeting the airport in what it called a “deliberate, calculated and unjustified attack”.
The IRGC said it had targeted US bases in the Gulf in retaliation for US strikes on an Iranian oil tanker and Qeshm Island.
The US said it had launched “self-defence” strikes on Iran, and shot down or intercepted Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait and Bahrain.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Caroline Hawley.

US and Iran launch new strikes, as Kuwait says airport hit by Iranian drones | BBC News
The US military said it launched “self-defence” strikes on Iran overnight, and shot down ballistic missiles and drones fired at ships and Gulf countries.
The strikes on Qeshm Island, in the Strait of Hormuz, were “in response to attempted attacks by Iran across the Middle East”, US Central Command (Centcom) said.
Iran said it had attacked US bases and helicopters in a “regional country” using missiles and drones in retaliation. Centcom said Tehran fired two missiles at Kuwait and three at Bahrain, all of which broke apart or were intercepted.
Kuwait’s army later said Iranian drones had hit its international airport, causing “significant” building damage and injuries to a number of people.
The latest attacks come amid stalled ceasefire negotiations between the US and Iran, after talks on a deal to end the months-long war failed to advance over the weekend.

How big a threat is Iran’s military now? | Global News Podcast
The US and Iran have traded strikes, as negotiations to extend their ceasefire drag on without a resolution. On Monday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted an air base used by US forces. It also threatened to open “new fronts” in the conflict, and keep the Strait of Hormuz closed, in response to Israel’s offensive in Lebanon.
So how great a threat does Iran’s military pose to the US and its allies, after more than three months of war?
President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that Iran’s forces have been “decimated”. But new analysis by the BBC has found that Iran has damaged at least 20 US military sites across the Middle East since the start of the war – suggesting the attacks are more extensive than publicly acknowledged. Using cheap drones, Iran has targeted American military equipment worth millions of dollars including THAAD batteries.
Iranian forces have also reportedly reopened several missile sites damaged early in the conflict.
We ask Merlyn Thomas from BBC Verify and Parham Ghobadi from BBC Persian about Iran’s military capacity and what it means for the chances of a deal between Washington and Tehran.

the black population of the UK is around 3.5% – yet every night on BBC news just about every face I see is black – reporters, newsreaders – in schools, police, on the street, on the tube – there's barely a white face anywhere – dont believe me ? well just watch with an open mind. Am I racist? I am married to a coloured girl for more than 20 yrs now. Its the BBC that is racist.

what is the point of women's football? men are not interested – women are not interested – yet we have no choice but to contribute via the BBC licence fee for the ultra-WOKE PC BBC coverage of a sport that almost nobody watches – more people watch curling. The BBC is the vanguard of an illiberal woke hard left agenda – everyone else can see it so why does the BBC still maintain that its impartial ? =- Silly me ! The licence fee of course. Duh !

Played for 20 years in Ice Hockey premierships. Back in the day when it was not so welcomed. We had constant abuse from male counterparts as well as assumptions we were all gay ( many of us were not, but even if that was the case…??!!!) so, this is nothing new. We never got « training » about prejudice or teams of people protecting us from it. We got beaten up outside the rink, our stuff got stolen from the lockeroom, and our ice time shorten by the never leaving male teams using it before us….It carried on for years….But we raised above it. We carried on with our heads high. It eventually stopped bit by bit. The more you talk about it, the more you are going to provoke people. Just decide what you want to do with your life and do not let haters control your choice. Move on!!!!!
