On certain winter nights, people all over Europe heard something pass over the land: horns, hounds, a great company of riders, many of them dead. This is the Wild Hunt as the old sources tell it.
– A young priest in Normandy, January 1091, stood by the road while the dead went past him in their companies. A monk heard it from his own mouth.
– The monks of Peterborough heard black huntsmen blowing their horns all through Lent in 1127.
– King Herla rode home after three days and found that two hundred years had gone, the little hound still in his arms.
– The furious host of Germany, and the ladies who led it.
– The ride from Asgard in Norway, and King Valdemar, who rides every night from Burre to Gurre.
– The white hounds of Wales, and Herne by his oak.
And the one piece of advice every country gave: lie down, seem to be asleep, and let it pass.

He remembered dying.

But every step toward greater strength reveals another problem.

The protagonist himself may no longer be entirely human.

As his abilities evolve, something monstrous begins emerging beneath his human appearance—something connected to multiple forms of life, devastating elemental power, darkness, flame, and a transformation unlike anything ordinary magic can explain.
