Growing anger over government refusal to fund meals for vulnerable children – BBC News

Published

on

There’s growing pressure on the government to reverse it’s decision, refusing to fund meals for disadvantaged children during school holidays.

A number of Conservative MPs and Councils have called on Boris Johnson to think again.

Meanwhile thousands of children’s doctors have added their support to the campaign by the footballer Marcus Rashford.

Tina Daheley presents BBC News reporting by political correspondent Nick Eardley.

We do not have starving children in this country. If they are vulnerable its from poor parenting and throwing more money at them wont help the children.

Torys sometimes miscalculate their policies. Not giving free school meals during holidays may be just in principle (the taxpayer already funded for those meals through universal credit) but in practice, not providing such meals becomes political suicide. Just rip the tax payer a little further and provide those bloody meals, even if in theory it should be their parents' responsibility not the taxpayers'.

So the uk parents can’t feed their kids during school holidays, well, even I do think these parents are not wise enough to have kids they can’t afford, but children are innocent, could the schools let children back school to get lunches everyday during school holidays?

Why is it that in England our government is always looking backwards compared to the rest of the country? The good thing coming out of this is people and some businesses are putting their hands in their pockets to help feed the kids that need the help! Surely government should help too? Problem is a tory government doesn't want you to have too much otherwise you will want more.

BBC= Biased Broadcasting Corporation. Constant anti-Tory editorial, and use of emotive words like 'anger' and 'refuses'. Earlier it was 'Johnson refuses' to fund school meals, like he was personally responsible for feeding little kids. I despair of the lack of impartiality and objectivity at the BBC, especially as I pay the licence fee.

I with my own eyes witnessed two boys roughly age 8 age 10 being arrested in Iceland for stealing food ! One trying to steal some milk the other trying to steal some chocolate. That’s not stealing for profit that’s stealing because they was hungry. This happend at the end of the schools six week holidays. So for people saying kids aren’t going hungry. It’s because your looking in the wrong places

  39. @chippypea

    January 26, 2024 at 11:20 am

I wouldn't have pets if I couldn't feed them so why people have kids when they cannot afford them I will never understand .. councils provide ALLOT of money to those who need it. Parents who buy junk food all the time for their kids shouldn't be allowed to keep them as it's not fair on the children because they do not choose what they eat. With the right planning you can design a menu based on what you earn, that's nutritious and filling.. just some parents cannot shop correctly. It's sad
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT …WHAT YOU EAT MAKES YOU WHO YOU ARE NOT HOW MUCH MONEY YOU HAVE

Airstrikes hit Kuwait airport – 1 dead and 60 injured – Iran and US launch more attacks | BBC News

Published

on

One person has been killed and more than 60 injured in strikes on Kuwait’s international airport.

Kuwait’s defence ministry spokesman blamed Iran, saying drones had attacked the airport, and called it “criminal Iranian aggression”.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) denied responsibility for the attacks, claiming the damage was caused by an error from a US missile interceptor.

US Central Command said this was false and also accused Iran in targeting the airport in what it called a “deliberate, calculated and unjustified attack”.

The IRGC said it had targeted US bases in the Gulf in retaliation for US strikes on an Iranian oil tanker and Qeshm Island.

The US said it had launched “self-defence” strikes on Iran, and shot down or intercepted Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait and Bahrain.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Caroline Hawley.

US and Iran launch new strikes, as Kuwait says airport hit by Iranian drones | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it launched “self-defence” strikes on Iran overnight, and shot down ballistic missiles and drones fired at ships and Gulf countries.

The strikes on Qeshm Island, in the Strait of Hormuz, were “in response to attempted attacks by Iran across the Middle East”, US Central Command (Centcom) said.

Iran said it had attacked US bases and helicopters in a “regional country” using missiles and drones in retaliation. Centcom said Tehran fired two missiles at Kuwait and three at Bahrain, all of which broke apart or were intercepted.

Kuwait’s army later said Iranian drones had hit its international airport, causing “significant” building damage and injuries to a number of people.

The latest attacks come amid stalled ceasefire negotiations between the US and Iran, after talks on a deal to end the months-long war failed to advance over the weekend.

How big a threat is Iran’s military now? | Global News Podcast

Published

on

The US and Iran have traded strikes, as negotiations to extend their ceasefire drag on without a resolution. On Monday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted an air base used by US forces. It also threatened to open “new fronts” in the conflict, and keep the Strait of Hormuz closed, in response to Israel’s offensive in Lebanon.

So how great a threat does Iran’s military pose to the US and its allies, after more than three months of war?

President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that Iran’s forces have been “decimated”. But new analysis by the BBC has found that Iran has damaged at least 20 US military sites across the Middle East since the start of the war – suggesting the attacks are more extensive than publicly acknowledged. Using cheap drones, Iran has targeted American military equipment worth millions of dollars including THAAD batteries.

Iranian forces have also reportedly reopened several missile sites damaged early in the conflict.

We ask Merlyn Thomas from BBC Verify and Parham Ghobadi from BBC Persian about Iran’s military capacity and what it means for the chances of a deal between Washington and Tehran.
