Fears that new Covid variant is more infectious and harder to contain – BBC News
Today, we discuss China’s £14.7bn investment into AI and robotics in the hopes of overtaking the US as the world leader in innovation.
China has two million robots already working in factories, and is investing heavily in the hopes that one day they could bridge gaps in an already sluggish economy. What can these robots do? And what does the future look like for workers? Our China correspondent Laura Bicker has been to some of these factories, and is on the line to debrief.
Plus, the government has announced more details about their housing plans, including where 70,000 social and affordable homes will be built in England over the next 10 years. 60% of the new homes would be for social rent, despite Andy Burnham telling The Social Housing Podcast in May he “would actually devote all of it to social housing.”.

China has vowed to protect its interests after the US announced plans to widen economic sanctions against Iran and its trading partners, which include Beijing.
Foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said China was firmly opposed to what it called “illegal unilateral sanctions” and would take “all necessary measures” to safeguard its rights.

It has been five years since the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan, as western forces left, imposing their extreme, ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam on millions of people.
Their return to power brought relative peace to the country after two decades of war.
But Afghan women have been erased from public life. Girls are banned from school from the age of 12, and aren’t allowed to go to university.
Public parks are also off limits to women – and they can’t travel abroad without a male companion.

it is statistically IMPOSSSIBLE at this point to have a dominate virus that is also more contagious and NOT have herd immunity. These are obviously reinfections, which by the way the majority of people who have had COVID, likely never knew it and never got tested. Now the real question is not whether it came from a Chinese bioweapon research facility, which it did, but whether it was intentionally seeded into countries around the world? China did not stop flights out of Wuhan or China even after it became clear that there was a significant outbreak of a highly contagious respiratory disease which they could not immediately contain? 🤔

The UK government knew about this new strain since September, but in an effort to boost Q4 GDP, kept it quiet until late December. All the while encouraging people to go out and eat, sending infected elderly back into care homes and leaving borders wide open without even the most basic of temperature checks
