Where is the war in Ukraine heading? | BBC Newsnight
37 people have been killed after a huge explosion at an arms depot in Ukraine which was struck by a Russian drone. The ams storage facility was based near a residential areas on the outskirts of the capital, Kyiv. Hundreds of people have been evacuated from the area and a rescue operation is continuing, with fears that the death toll will rise.
Shells, mines and drones stored at the facility exploded in a massive blast that destroyed nearby homes nearby, including a care home for the elderly and disabled.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly criticised the location of the depot near people’s homes, saying an investigation had been launched into “terrible negligence on the part of those who stored explosive right next to people”.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence said that its forces had targeted “an ammunition depot”.

Hawk Fire wildfire in Nevada expected to rage for another two days, say officials | BBC News
US fire crews have reported progress in their efforts to tackle a large wildfire menacing the city of Reno, Nevada – saying the blaze is about a quarter contained.
The Hawk Fire, which began on Saturday, had spread over 15,000 acres by Monday, firefighters said.
Evacuation orders remain in place for 23,000 people, though other residents have now been allowed to return to their homes. Tens of thousands of other residents have been told to be ready to leave at any moment.
Officials are concerned that gusts of wind could drive the flames towards more homes. Unfavourable weather conditions are forecast for the next two days, meaning the fire could continue to burn during that timeframe.

China has vowed to protect its interests after the US announced plans to widen economic sanctions against Iran and its trading partners, which include Beijing.

Shut up and listen to yourselves. From the beginning Ukraine can never win and even a fantastic idiot knows that. Mr Putin is right to say you can prolong it but Russia will achieve her objectives. That is the mind set of a realist and able to confront the demons ahead. As for the west is about strategic defeat of Russia without questionable objective and goals. Ukraine leaders are robust lap dog for the US and EU. Over 700,000 to one million Ukrainian men dead and someone in the West think this is okay. The only pride the Russian leadership can have is when they take everything Russia without leaving any Russians behine in Ukraine. After all thzy do not want there people to be every where in the EU and been dehumanised just as we are witnessing predominantly in the Baltic states and Poland.

Late in 2022 Russia issued a public ultimatum to NATO to withdraw all its infrastructure from Eastern Europe (Poland, Baltics, Romania, Bulgaria) or else they threatened war. This was official and public. Putin thought they were ready to reclaim soviet sphere of influence over eastern Europe. Ukraine was just the start but it did not go as planned. Donbass issue is just another artificial problem created by Russia to pull strings and exercise pressure. When it did not work, they went to full scale invasion. Russia initiates wars in neighboring countries to maintain leverage and control. Ukraine – separatism, big war, annexion; Moldova – separatism, war; Armenia and Azerbaijan – separatism war; Georgia – separatism, wars. And its "never Russia's fault". I will live the day this country ceases to exist in its current form.

The Pentagon did not properly monitor the transfer of weapons to Ukraine; more than half of the total supply remained unaccounted for, this conclusion is contained in the report of the US Department of Defense Inspector General Robert Storch.
The document states that after the start of the special operation, the military department improved supervision over the use of weapons transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but it did not fully comply with the requirements of the monitoring program.
According to Storch, about a billion dollars worth of weapons remain unaccounted for out of a total supply of 1.699 billion. The monitoring situation is complicated by the fact that the Pentagon did not keep inventories of weapons.
