Russian invasion of Ukraine “may be imminent” warns White House – BBC News

Published

on

The US government believes Russia could launch an invasion of Ukraine at any moment.

The White House press secretary warned of an “extremely dangerous situation” on the country’s border, where Russia has massed more than 100,000 troops.

Talks between the United States and Russian have failed to resolve the stand-off between the two countries and the US has warned Russia of “dire economic consequences” if it invades its neighbour.

Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by diplomatic correspondent James Landale.

Those who understand know they are aiming for Poland and Oder border again and it's not like Germany doesn't find it convenient again…they know how to make business together. EU integration looks like children's pretend game. Real politic bonds are the strongest.

Russia is unfazed with sanction threats by the United States. China has Russia’s economic backing. It seems the U.S. is the only country that is making a noise about it. Germany says, “i don’t wanna get involve”. The French are mediating but will end up not getting in the action and the United Nations is a useless body. The supposed to be NATO allies have a faint voice. Still, Biden is so vocal and public about threatening sanction. I don’t think the United States is ready to go to war for Ukraine. Putin has the determination to risk war e.g. Crimea. Biden is merely talking economic embargo. The United States needs another Ronald Reagan.

I like what I just read on the WATCHING AMERICA WEB SITE : Le Journal de Quebec, Feb. 9 , 2022 :
[ Intimidation: It’s Cheap and It Pays Well

"Why did the American administration feel the need to panic the entire planet about an invasion of Ukraine? Could it be to divert attention from Biden’s domestic policy problems and his growing unpopularity in the polls? To show that he can stand up to Putin?

In recent decades, the United States has repeatedly invaded countries to impose its political will, with far more catastrophic failure than success. Others who are more astute use the threat of invasion to get adversaries to accede to their demands, at least in part. Intimidation is an excellent foreign policy tool. It usually pays well and costs much less than war. In this case, we’ll see if that is true for Putin. "]

Bastille Day – Europe’s attempt at collective military strength | BBC News

Published

on

A military parade has marched through the streets of Paris below clouds of red, white and blue smoke left by planes in the sky as part of Bastille Day celebrations.

Held each year on 14 July, the national holiday marks the storming of the Bastille fortress in 1789, a key event from the French Revolution.

President Emmanuel Macron was joined by European leaders, including the UK’s Sir Keir Starmer and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, as soldiers from Ukraine and its ‘Coalition of the Willing’ allies passed by.

The BBC’s James Waterhouse reports on the day’s celebrations.

Counter terrorism police now leading investigation into Ann Widdecombe’s death | BBC News

Published

on

Counter terrorism police are now leading the investigation into the death of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe, after “new information and evidence has come to light”, Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) has said.

“The police are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. I will be updating the House further this afternoon,” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said.

A 28-year-old white British man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was originally arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday but has now been re-arrested “on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism”, CTPSE said.

Police said the “dynamic and complex investigation” had led to the new arrest.

On Thursday, 78-year-old Widdecombe was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, having sustained serious injuries.

Sir Keir Starmer is fighting to stay on as prime minister as the pressure mounts | BBC News

Published

on

Three members of his government, including Home Office minister Jess Phillips, have resigned, whilst scores of Labour MPs are calling for him to quit following a disastrous set of elections for the party last week.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among a number of cabinet ministers urging the prime minister to set out a departure timetable.

Sir Keir said he does not intend to quit and threw down the gauntlet to potential rivals to formally challenge him as Labour leader.

No MP has yet launched a formal bid to challenge him, which requires the backing of 81 colleagues or 20% of Labour MPs, according to party rules.
