As a heartfelt gift to Mr. Zelensky, the Prime Minister of Japan presented him with a "shamoji" (a rice paddle) inscribed with the phrase "hisshou" (which means to always strike down the opponent). This tool, used to serve rice into a bowl, also has the meaning of "meshtoru" (to apprehend), implying the idea of defeating the opponent. In other words, as the Prime Minister of Japan, he wants to continue to support Ukraine fully, beyond direct military involvement, until they achieve victory in their conflict with Russia.

A coronavirus lockdown has been put in place around the world’s largest iPhone manufacturing plant in China.

The lockdown in Zhengzhou follows footage shared on social media of workers fleeing the Foxconn plant due to strict on-site Covid rules being issued.

Fukushima: The nuclear disaster that shook the world – BBC News

Published

on

On March 11th 2011, Japan’s most powerful earthquake on record triggered a tsunami, which then caused a meltdown at a nuclear power plant.
It wiped entire towns off the map and forced Fukushima’s residents from their homes as radiation leaked from the plant. The government estimates the disaster could cost nearly $200bn, and the clean-up may take until 2051.
Today the prefecture of Fukushima is still dealing with the aftermath of the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. What happened that day, and what was it like for the people who lived through it?
The BBC’s Tui McLean explains how the triple disaster unfolded.
