US Asian veteran shows scars to call out racism – BBC News

Published

on

An Asian-American ex-soldier who lifted his shirt to show scars, he had gained in service to the US, to prove his “patriotism” in a town hall meeting has gone viral on social media.

Lee Wong, 69, has been applauded for making a powerful statement about discrimination.

But some people have said Asian-Americans should not feel compelled to prove their loyalty to their country.

    Never mind what Wong did.
He has to accept that he is still Asian in America.

If it wasn't for Asian Americans during World War II, these people would be speaking German. But, their history books as usual don't tell the truth because it'll make them less. Asians were the most decorated units of World War II because they are fearless. That is the way of the Samurai

    I'm proud to be Asian.
Fighting and suffering for American, then be abused and rejected by Americans. Still stand proud to serve wherever he is.👏
Can an American to that in another country?

This is absolutely amazing. Prejudice is sickening. My dad immigrated to America over 40 years ago and has worked for the government for 30 years. He still gets called a terrorist. Told to go back to India (he's Pakistani but why would a racist care about that distinction?). And has been mocked for his thick accent countless times. I don't know how people who face this still stay so humble and kind. It's breathtaking.

It is sad that someone has to show their battle scars to prove their patriotism. What has become of this world? Those who spread hate are the true enemies of a country. Spreading hatred and creating divisions is not patriotism.

Iceland on track to reject EU referendum as counting nears end | BBC News

Published

on

Iceland has voted against resuming membership talks with the European Union, public broadcaster RUV has reported, with just one constituency’s votes left to count.

It reported that 52.5% of the 188,496 votes so far counted had rejected the government’s proposal, while 47.5% had said yes. Some 9,500 votes separated them.

Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir’s centre-left government promised to hold a referendum by 2027, but brought it forward because of international tensions, including US President Donald Trump’s threats against Greenland.
