Coronavirus “spreading fast” as millions more face local lockdowns – BBC News

Published

on

A quarter of the UK’s population will be under some sort of local lockdown by this weekend after new restrictions were announced for two million more people in Northern England.

The Health Secretary for England, Matt Hancock, said the disease was “spreading fast” in some areas and was “highly localised”. He described the new rules as challenging but necessary.

The latest areas affected are Liverpool City Region, Warrington, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough. In some areas there are around 9 times as many cases as the average across England.

The new restrictions mean it will be against the law to mix with other households whether at home, in a garden or in a pub or a cafe. People who flout the rules could face heavy fines.

There’s also guidance not to mix with other households in pub gardens, parks or at sporting events.

There are calls tonight for the Scottish Nationalist MP Margaret Ferrier to resign, after she admitted travelling by train from Scotland to London after developing Covid symptoms, and then returning home after testing positive. Nicola Sturgeon described her actions as “utterly indefensible” Margaret Ferrier has been suspended by the SNP.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Ed Thomas in Liverpool, Fiona Trott in Middlesbrough and political correspondent Nick Eardley.

Published

There was a gender divide in the US in 2024 and one of the criticisms of the failed Democrat presidential campaign was that they appealed to women and largely ignored men.

So, with the midterms coming up, and the 2028 battle lines being drawn, how much is are political conversations going to centre around who can attract the male vote?

Justin’s been talking to a man who’s been thinking about that very question.

Russian drone hits Romanian apartment block | BBC News

A Russian drone hit an apartment block in Romania causing a fire and wounding two people, officials say.

The incident happened on Friday in the town of Galati – close to Romania’s eastern border with Ukraine and Moldova.

Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte said “Russia’s reckless behaviour is a danger to us all”, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia’s “war of aggression had crossed yet another line”.

Russian drones have strayed across Romania’s border a number of times during the four-year war with Ukraine, but it is the first time citizens from the Nato country have been hurt. Russia has yet to comment on the incident.
