Why does Soledar matter in the Russia-Ukraine conflict? – BBC News
37 people have been killed after a huge explosion at an arms depot in Ukraine which was struck by a Russian drone. The ams storage facility was based near a residential areas on the outskirts of the capital, Kyiv. Hundreds of people have been evacuated from the area and a rescue operation is continuing, with fears that the death toll will rise.
Shells, mines and drones stored at the facility exploded in a massive blast that destroyed nearby homes nearby, including a care home for the elderly and disabled.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly criticised the location of the depot near people’s homes, saying an investigation had been launched into “terrible negligence on the part of those who stored explosive right next to people”.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence said that its forces had targeted “an ammunition depot”.

Hawk Fire wildfire in Nevada expected to rage for another two days, say officials | BBC News
US fire crews have reported progress in their efforts to tackle a large wildfire menacing the city of Reno, Nevada – saying the blaze is about a quarter contained.
The Hawk Fire, which began on Saturday, had spread over 15,000 acres by Monday, firefighters said.
Evacuation orders remain in place for 23,000 people, though other residents have now been allowed to return to their homes. Tens of thousands of other residents have been told to be ready to leave at any moment.
Officials are concerned that gusts of wind could drive the flames towards more homes. Unfavourable weather conditions are forecast for the next two days, meaning the fire could continue to burn during that timeframe.

China has vowed to protect its interests after the US announced plans to widen economic sanctions against Iran and its trading partners, which include Beijing.

Soledar salt mine contains an immense stash of weapons the oldest of which date from WWI, there are some from WWII, from the lend-lease with the U.S and the more modern ones from the 1990's.

"Strategically Important" is a euphemism of we (Western Media) believe in Russian propoganda. Both Soledar and Bakhmut have no strategic value. These towns, however, have a political value to the Kremlin since they can point to the acquisition of land for domestic consumption of "see we are winning". Aside from that no "Strategic Value" lies in these two abandoned, dead towns. It reminds me of last year's similar Western Media hype of the towns of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk. No strategic value! Just more propoganda for Russia's domestic consumption.

That Russia is wasting countless lives to capture a town which geographically holds little importance speaks to another motivation. As reported the town has = salt mines. So forget the salt and focus on the mines. Russian forces have been getting hammered by accurate artillery/rocket fire to say nothing of drones. Russian command and control centers and munitions dumps have been targeted by Ukraine with devastating results at times.
So it appears that Russia desperately needs "holes in the ground" safe from Ukrainian fire in which to tuck its forces and commanders. 🤭 To that end it is throwing away a lot of lives – basically cleaning out its prison system – in an attempt to capture a safe haven for its forces. Sounds like the US and NATO need to give Ukraine missiles like the Maverick. Let Russia hide in its holes = then Ukraine can seal them up……… 🤫

Soledar and the 5 salt mines known as the Artyomsol salt mines are interconnected with 125 miles of tunnels.
They have been used to house stockpiles of weapons as far back as World War One. And with that distance of tunnels and underground rooms, they probably house other things down there that they don’t want Russia to get their hands on!
So strategically, these mines and tunnels are 80 – 100 metres underground and a safe place to hide things that you want to keep safe from shells and missiles.

It is ridiculous how the West continues to talk about Russian convicts spearheading the fight instead of the Russian army. I am actually surprised that convicts can fight like a regular army or even better.
