Israel says war in Gaza expected to continue throughout 2024| BBC News
The Israeli military has said it expects the conflict in Gaza to continue throughout 2024.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman said troop deployments were being adjusted to prepare for “prolonged fighting”.
The Hamas-run health ministry said some 21,978 people – mostly women and children – have been killed in Gaza since 7 October.

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.
In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.
He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.
Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.
Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.
The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.
It comes after another night of strikes between the US and Iran, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it hit two UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and targeted US facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.
The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.
Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.
Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.
President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.

Those of you who support the “Palestinian resistance” to Israel, whether or not you explicitly endorse the Hamas butchery of October 7, do you know what “Palestine” actually is? Well, it is not a country, not even an agreed-upon section of land. Arguably, there is no such thing as a “Palestinian people,” certainly not as a distinct ethnic group that is distinct from other Middle Eastern Arabs. “Palestine” is the name of the region we now know as Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, and the term was originally coined by the Romans when they ethnically cleansed the Jews out of their land in the second century C.E. The term was again used by the British when they were given responsibility by the League of Nations for temporarily governing the broader region, after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. “Palestine” was understood to mean Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, and Jordan. Everyone who lived there, whether Jew or Arab, Christian or Druze, was a “Palestinian.” Let me say it again: Jews, too, were considered "Palestinian."
The British implemented the League of Nations Mandate by first creating several states for the Arabs, including Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. But a large number of Jewish immigrants had already settled in the area by that time, having legally purchased land from Arab landlords, and by 1947 Jews had become a third of the population of the remaining area of Palestine, minus Jordan. The United Nations then partitioned the land into a state for the Jews, and another state for the Arabs living there. The Jews accepted this partition and called their nation “Israel.” The Arabs living in Israel proper, as well as those in Gaza and the West Bank and all of the surrounding Arab countries, rejected the U.N. partition and went to war against Israel. They did not accept a nation of their own. If they had, they could have called it "Palestine" and we would not be where we are today. Bad choice. Until the creation of the P.L.O. in the early 1960s, only a handful of intellectuals referred to the Arab people in the area as Palestinians. They were just Arabs, and Arab people, ever since Mohammed’s conquest in the 7th century C.E., have regarded Jews as their enemies and their inferiors. They would not then, and still do not now, accept any form of Jewish self-rule in the Middle East. Where do you think the phrase “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” comes from?
Except that there still is no Palestine. There is the West Bank of Jordan, some of it governed by the Palestinian Authority, some of it directly controlled by Israel. And there are the Jewish settlements. I know, they're terrible, I get it. But after all the Jew killing and refusal of the Arabs to accept Israel, what did you expect? You want a free “Palestine”? First acknowledge the right of Israel to exist, let go of your claim to the land “from the river to the sea,” come back to the negotiating table, and let go of your bogus “right of return” that would allow 7+ million Palestinian descendants from the 1948 war into Israel’s borders. That will never happen. It might also help if you stopped teaching all your children to hate Jews. Do that, with the understanding that after waging war on Israel for 100 years you will have to accept a smaller portion of the land you were allotted in 1947, and you might just see an actual nation of “Palestine.” Until then, it’s all just a miserable dream that will never be reality.
