Gabriel Attal becomes France’s youngest prime minister | BBC News
Gabriel Attal has been named France’s next prime minister, as Emmanuel Macron aims to revive his presidency with a new government.
At 34, he is the youngest PM in modern French history, outranking even Socialist Laurent Fabius who was 37 when he was appointed by François Mitterrand in 1984.
Mr Attal replaces Élisabeth Borne, who resigned after 20 months in office.
Throughout that time she struggled with a lack of a majority in parliament.

Victory for Joe Biden: “It’s time for America to unite and to heal” – BBC News
Joe Biden has said he is “honoured and humbled” after winning the US Presidential election. He crossed the threshold of 270 Electoral College votes needed by winning the states of Pennsylvania and Nevada.
In a statement the President-Elect said: “In the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted. Proving once again, that democracy beats deep in the heart of America. It’s time for America to unite. And to heal.”
The election has seen the highest turnout since 1900. Mr Biden has won more than 73 million votes, the most ever recorded for a US presidential candidate.
The result denies Donald Trump a second term after a divisive presidency defined by the coronavirus pandemic, bitter culture wars and social unrest.
Tina Daheley presents BBC news reporting from north America editor Jon Sopel in Washington and Nick Bryant with the Biden campaign in Wilmington, Delaware.

Coronavirus: Trump claims advice to inject disinfectant was just “sarcasm” – BBC News
One of the world’s biggest disinfectant manufacturers has issued an urgent warning, after President Trump suggested people could inject themselves with the substance to treat coronavirus.
The company which makes products including Dettol and Vanish warned that “under no circumstance” should its products be administered to humans “through injection, ingestion or any other route”.
Disinfectants are poisonous if ingested and even external exposure can be dangerous to the skin, eyes and respiratory system. The President’s comments were heavily criticised by medical experts. Later he said he was simply being sarcastic. 50,000 people have now died in the United States from coronavirus infection.

Brexit: MPs block Prime Minister’s bid for early election – BBC News
The UK Prime Minister’s demand for an early General Election looks set to be rejected by Members of Parliament after opposition parties agreed it shouldn’t take place until after the European Union Summit in mid-October.
Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru the party of Wales say they won’t back the government’s bid for an election. They declared they wanted an extension to the Brexit date of October 31st to guarantee that the UK won’t leave the EU without a deal.
On a visit to Scotland, Mr Johnson accused them of making an “extraordinary political mistake”. It came as the House of Lords approved a bill to prevent a no-deal Brexit. It will get royal assent and become law on Monday.
Our Deputy Political Editor John Pienaar reports, Reeta Chakrabarti presents.

Brexit trade deal finally agreed – BBC News
A post-Brexit trade deal has finally been agreed, four and a half years after the UK voted to leave the European Union.
The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it would protect jobs and provide certainty for business.
After months of talks and frantic last-minute wrangling over fishing, negotiators finally reached agreement on Christmas Eve, with just a week to go before the deadline when the UK’s transition period was coming to an end.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula Von de Leyen, described it as a good and fair agreement.
Some business leaders said the agreement had come as a “huge relief”. However others — along with some British politicians — said they would wait to study the details of the agreement before reaching a judgement on it.
Sophie Raworth presents BBC News reporting by political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Europe editor Katya Adler, business editor Simon Jack, deputy political editor Vicki Young, James Cook in Glasgow, Tomos Morgan in Cardiff and Emma Vardy in Belfast.

If you're not married by 34 you're too old. If you're prime minister, it's considered young.

I imagine there's a lot of tension between cultures in France, but Attal chooses to ban abayas.. yet a lot of comments seem to think he's 'very capable' 😐 to restrict people's expression of their beliefs doesn't seem like a sure way to relieve tension if you ask me

His claims of being gay makes him morally incompetent to lead a country and much less discharge duties being that he hasn't understood his true identity and would be prone to erroneous reasoning , engagement, abuse of office and purpose of humanity.

This peaked my interest until I heard he was a Macron loyalist who championed that ban on the abaya. So basically he's a younger, gayer Macron? Groundbreaking.

I'm excited and can't wait to see how he would change France.. A young PM😎.. He'd adapt to the current generation Z pretty well. With a technology advancing world. I'm curious how he would bring about changes for his country. Personally i think it's very good that a young person gets to be PM in today's world

Correction: An abaya is a loose garment like a dress. Hijab is the head scarf Muslim women wear, but it also refers to modesty.
