Sri Lanka’s Uprising: Has it made any difference to life in the country? – BBC Newsnight
6 months ago, amid an unprecedented economic disaster in the country, Sri Lankan crowds sensationally stormed the presidential palace and its widely reviled leader Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled.
Have the lives of ordinary Sri Lankans improved since the revolution? Despite some improvements in urban areas as a result of greater political stability and an agreement in principle with the IMF on a national bailout, Newsnight finds that there remains intense economic suffering in the country.
Food insecurity is affecting a fifth of the population and the poverty rate has doubled.
Economics editor Ben Chu speaks to fishermen who say they sometimes do not go to sea because fuel prices are too high, and to tea farmers reeling from a collapse in agriculture due to a 2021 ban on fertiliser imports as well as rocketing fuel bills pushed up by the Ukraine war.

Seven people have died after a passenger boat capsized near northern Cyprus.
Search and rescue operations are under way to find 23 people missing, said Ünal Üstel, prime minister of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
He says 267 people were on board the vessel when it capsized, and 237 have been rescued.
The boat left from the northern Cypriot port of Kyrenia at 11:58 local time (09:58 BST) and officials said it capsized around four nautical miles into its journey to Turkey.

Ukraine’s progress against Russian forces in its southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia has been far more limited than its successes in the north-east.
Both sides come under regular fire as they rely heavily on artillery to push forward.
The crackdown on people who do not support Russian rule in occupied areas is rising, with soldiers going door-to-door to check on who lives in each house and whether they could be drafted into fighting for Russia.

The government has said it will exercise “extreme caution” over lifting the lockdown. Ministers stress it will be a gradual process, not a single leap to freedom. It comes as the Prime Minister prepares to address the nation, to set out the next phase in tackling the coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile major airlines have called for clarity after being told that the government will bring in a 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving in the UK, from any country apart from the Republic of Ireland.
The transport secretary Grant Shapps has called on people to walk and cycle to work, once the lockdown restrictions are eased in England. He said it was a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to transform the way people get around.
Senior clerics are urging the government to act cautiously before allowing places of worship to reopen. All churches, mosques, synagogues and temples closed their doors almost two months ago.

They are playing major role in SL economy more than 200 yrs
2021 net profits from tea export is 1.32 billion USD but still government and companies are crying and saying we don’t have any profit

If you want to know the real situation on Sri Lanka just type "Is it safe to travel to sri lanka now?" into Youtube and see for yourself. Lots of tourists who have visited the country after the crisis have documented about it. Avoid main stream media as much as possible.

I'm a Sri Lankan Muslim very proud to say that my country is very beautiful in South East Asia and nice weather condition when compared with other countries. The problem is mainly our politicians. Not all some, and other things racicam this is the big issue in our beautiful country. If we get good politicians and say no racicam then my country will be in the top level

Life in Srilanka is absolute hell. Power bill is 10 times higher than it used to be. They've reduced the salary of government workers. Price of goods are 7 times higher than the previous year.

Beruwala is a small fishing town, If BBC wanted to speak to authentic fisher folk from major fishing towns in South , they should have visited Hikkaduwa , Ambalangoda etc.
Further this documentary does not have present the plight of the majority community of Sri Lanka.
I wonder BBC has mainly concerned about communities speaking a minority language in Sri Lanka ..
