Russia’s elite marines sent into death trap in Ukraine | BBC News
In October 2022, Russia sent men from its elite 155th Marine Brigade, the “Black Berets” to take the town of Vuhledar in Ukraine.
In a rare protest letter, the Black Berets claimed that “inept” commanders cost them 300 men in just four days, and that the same commanders called them “meat”.
The Russian authorities denied the number of losses. But who was right?
Piecing together online testimonies, death records and battle footage BBC Eye found evidence that glaring tactical mistakes caused one of the highest concentrations of losses for a single Russian unit since the beginning of the war.

Nepal flood survivors are rescued from a tunnel and other top news stories | Global News Podcast
Rescue crews in Nepal have saved two workers from a blocked hydropower tunnel, nine days after they were trapped by debris from flash floods. An advisor to the rescue operation has describes it has “layer upon layer of layer of miracles”.
About 40 people are believed to still be trapped in the tunnel. Flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border last week has left almost 1,300 people dead, and more than 5,000 missing.

Gangs who illegally smuggle people to UK running low on small boats, investigation finds | BBC News
A BBC investigation has found criminal groups who illegally smuggle people to the UK across the English Channel are running low on small boats.
Gang members have told BBC sources that rival factions are now having to work together to load migrants on fewer, larger vessels. They’re also charging them more.
The number of crossings is currently at a six-year-low and UK ministers have credited the French police for intercepting more attempts.
The BBC’s Paris Correspondent James Waterhouse has looked at how the people smugglers are being forced to adapt.

Tactically what the Russians are doing is simply insane. Squads and platoons attacking with armored vehicles but no dismounted infantry or air cover. US units in modern warfare do not try to take territory using small units and certainly not in broad daylight.

Another wave of recruits will immediately arrive at the front. They were recruited from the markets where the year was celebrated in the big cities of Russia. Hundreds of buses were loaded with young people who wanted to celebrate with their families, girlfriends, wives and loved ones.

The Russian president said that the country's performance in 2022 and 2023, with a small drop in the first year, and a possible growth above 4% in the second, had surprising results.
Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, admitted that Russian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in 2023 could be above the projected 3.5%.
"More than 4%? Well, maybe so. We had a decline in 2022, Mikhail Vladimirovich [Mishustin, Russian Prime Minister] told me this before coming here, the decline we counted on was 2.1%, it's actually over being 1.2% […]. Therefore, perhaps there will be more GDP growth", he said in a meeting with businesspeople in the city of Khabarovsk.

In reality when you look at hospital admissions, obituaries, funerals and the expansions of grave yards in Ukraine you see the real number of actual Ukrainian deaths roughly 400 000 deaths, and yet the disgraced BBC avoids the heavy casualties of the depleted UAF and uses hyperbole with no credible claims of Russian casualties. Was the rapper who joined the black beret marines part of the Russian rap group gamora? I used to listen to (and love) their music when I was at ufc Berkeley in 2012/2013, and that clip shown when discussing him looks exactly like one of their vids and sounds exactly like their music, but I know there are other rap groups with a similar look and sound so idk. Anyone who can, please clarify!!

You know what, I admire your skilled reporting but I can't keep watching this. These special forces get not a shred of pity from me. These guys aren't helpless conscripts who didn't have a choice, they came to Ukraine to kill. Murdered by people who stopped them from doing just that. And not a single line of sympathetic war poetry can convince me otherwise. If they turned their guns against their inept commanders who called them meat, I'd respect them.
