Plans to overhaul the social care system in the UK have been shelved until the autumn.

Two years ago Boris Johnson stood on the steps of Downing Street promising his plan to fix the social care crisis was ready to go.

The government is also rumoured to be considering a 1% increase to national insurance to fund the system.

What are we prepared to pay to fund social care? And would an increase to national insurance be the best solution?

Newsnight’s political editor Nick Watt and economics editor Ben Chu report. Emily Maitlis is joined by Sir Andrew Dilnot, who led the 2011 review into social care, pollster for Theresa May James Johnson and CEO of the National Care Forum, Vic Rayner.

Why do people use social system to bully and threaten people????

We must be able to live OUR lives as we are.

Why do so many people seemingly having rights over other people. Rights to say what happens to them and their children. These people who have never met them. these people who hear or think things and see that as truth when it's not, it's not truth it's a thought, a Chinese whisper. what makes it ok for a person to tell another or take from another what is not theirs to take. Why is someone who studies another's work considered a professional when someone who studies life itself isn't? why?????

What lies by the Tories – National Insurance Tax on low and middle salary earners in Uk ( 25 million people ) to fund socialcare .Quarter of 65+ have over £1 million of property assets and young earners 45 below can not get onto property ladder and renting – Why should the Wealthy Pensioners in South ( Tory Voters ) benefit from Working people in rest off the country North west / midlands /North east .The Care system should be Means Tested paid for by Wealth Pensioners – rather then passing onto relatives/Families -why should rest of us pay for there care when they have Money . Wealth TAX

Are robot companions good for the elderly? – BBC News

Published

on

Voice-operated care robots are being marketed at older people who spend most of their time alone at home.

However, there are also concerns that technology pretending to be older people’s friends actually makes things worse.

CEO and co-founder of Intuition Robotics Dor Skuler said: “As humans we have a lot of social needs, we have a need for companionship, we have a need for social interaction and we felt that technology has reached a point where an artificially-enabled robot can do that.”

Retiree Beryl Voss explains why she uses care companion robot ElliQ at home and how it works.

President Trump says the US won’t attack Iran before crucial midterm elections | BBC News

Published

on

Donald Trump says the United States will not attack Iran ‘at any time’ before the midterm elections at the start of November.

His comments follow US media reports that the Pentagon was preparing plans for fresh strikes and a return to combat operations.

Elsewhere the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen attack airports across Saudi Arabia, with smoke billowing over Riyadh as the conflict continues to escalate.

And the USS Abraham Lincoln returns to California after a record-breaking deployment to the Middle East, which was plagued by reports of low morale and attempted suicides.

Houthi missile attack on Yemeni presidential palace kills two, minister says | BBC News

Published

on

The Houthis in Yemen have attacked the presidential palace in the port city of Aden – the seat of the internationally-recognised government.

Meanwhile, President Masoud Pezeshkian has told Iranians that the country is facing its most intense blockade since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and has accused the US of seeking to provoke public protests.

The Saudi-led military coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis says it has intercepted a missile in the Medina region. The Houthis have threatened more attacks on Saudi Arabia but have denied carrying out this one.

Finally, according to reports, the US is considering using its biggest non-nuclear bomb against Iran if President Donald Trump should decide to renew combat in the war that has hit a deadlock.

Yemen frontline: fighting the Houthi rebels targeting Saudi Arabia | BBC News

Published

on

Heavy fighting has been taking place in Yemen, as pro-government forces take on the country’s Houthi rebels, whose recent attacks on neighbouring Saudi Arabia have seized the world’s attention.

Yemen’s long civil war has become impossible to ignore, as the latest attacks by the Houthis, who are funded by Iran, play into the wider conflicts in the Middle East.

The Houthis took control of Yemen’s capital in 2014, ousting the country’s internationally-recognised government. A year later a Saudi-led coalition of Arab states intervened, trying to dislodge the Houthis. Despite years of devastating air strikes, that hasn’t worked.

Now Yemen’s Houthi fighters – already a threat to global shipping with attacks in the Red Sea – are an increasing threat to Saudi Arabia. And they provide leverage for their backers in Iran, Saudi’s regional rival.

The BBC has been given rare access to Yemen and the latest desert battlefields.

Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Orla Guerin.
