How is power restored in Ukraine after Russian attacks? – BBC News

Published

on

Ukraine’s engineers have been in constant battle for heat and light, racing to restore electricity and end the energy war after Russia’s attacks on the country’s grid.

Since October, when temperatures began to plummet, Russia has been using strikes on Ukraine’s power grid to force the civilian population into submission.

For two weeks, the BBC watched engineers and technicians who run the network racing to repair the damage and keep electricity flowing across the country.

If Ukraine can send electrical engineers to South Africa, we will bribe the ANC (Ramaphosa) to go to Russia. In just a few years there will be nothing left and all Russian weapons missing, so they can't fight anymore.

You know what happens when all this is over (if its over, maybe WW3 starts and we are all fd.) but if it stops, then everyone's house has to be searched in the Ukraine, because many died, and if a house seems empty and no one lives there more, then they sell it. Its like I found it, I own it now.

then we have Adolf Zelenskys The Azov Battalionis a far-right all-volunteer infantry military unit forming part of military reserve of National Guard of UkraineThe unit is based in Mariupol in the Azov Sea coastal region.[9] It saw its first combat experience recapturing Mariupol from pro-Russian separatists forces in June 2014. Initially a volunteer militia, formed as the Azov Battalion on 5 May 2014 during the 2014 pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine, Azov has since been incorporated into and is armed by Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs. All members of the unit are under contract of National Guard of Ukraine. The Azov Battalion has been labelled neo-Nazi, "patriots", "a far-right Ukrainian militia" German ZDF television observed Azov battalion fighters wearing helmets with swastikas and "the 'SS runes' of Hitler's infamous black-uniformed elite corps", and on other occasions some of the soldiers have been reported to have SS tattoos. Spokesmen and other members of the Azov Battalion and government officials have denied that the organization has any neo-Nazi or white supremacist beliefs; although a spokesman did state that "10% to 20% of the group's members are Nazis". The regiment's commander and founder is Andriy Biletsky who in the past made statements about "crusade" of "White races" against "Semitic Untermenschen"]and is a leader of a Ukrainian organisation called the Social National Assembly which according to the BBC has "typical neo-Nazi narrative"] Its polished English-language social media pages and far-right ideology have attracted fighters from other locations in Europe. On 11 June 2015 the US House of Representatives passed amendments blocking any training of Azov by US forces, citing its neo-Nazi background as the reason. On 26 June, Canadian defense minister declared as well that training by Canadian forces or support would not be provided to Azov this is who we are arming these animals with tanks

Iceland on track to reject EU referendum as counting nears end | BBC News

Published

on

Iceland has voted against resuming membership talks with the European Union, public broadcaster RUV has reported, with just one constituency’s votes left to count.

It reported that 52.5% of the 188,496 votes so far counted had rejected the government’s proposal, while 47.5% had said yes. Some 9,500 votes separated them.

Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir’s centre-left government promised to hold a referendum by 2027, but brought it forward because of international tensions, including US President Donald Trump’s threats against Greenland.
