Autumn Statement: Victoria Derbyshire’s interview with Chief Secretary to the Treasury John Glen
As part of the Autumn Statement yesterday Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced £55 billion in tax rises and a squeeze in public spending that he said would tackle spiralling inflation.
Hunt has warned families face “real challenges”, as government forecasters predict the biggest drop in living standards since records began.
The Office for Budget Responsibility, the independent economic forecaster, says household income will fall by 7% over the next 18 months.
The chancellor said the announcements in his Autumn Statement would help tame inflation which he said had caused the drop in living standards. But Labour said fairer choices about tax could have been made.
Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves described the emergency budget measures as “an invoice for the economic carnage” created by the policies of former Prime Minister Liz Truss.
Newsnight’s Victoria Derbyshire spoke to Chief Secretary to the Treasury John Glen on the day of the statement, and started by asking him why the government is raising taxes now that the UK is in a recession.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News
The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.
In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News
President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.
He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.
Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.
Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.
The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News
The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.
Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.
President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.

This man is A MEMBER OF THE GOVERNMENT and yet he still doesn't know, that the country at war with Russia is UKRAINE …not "The Ukraine".
This Conservative Government is a collection of DELUDED MORONS who don't know their backsides from their elbows;
THEY BELONG IN PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITALS, BEFORE THEY DO ANY MORE DAMAGE TO THE POPULATION OF THE UK; OR TO THE FABRIC OF THE COUNTRY..!!
They have had a long term plan, to ransack this country, since the 1970s.
…and look at the damage they have done..!!
Truss and Kwarteng were so arrogant, that they thought they could get away with DAYLIGHT ROBBERY..!!
That is to say nothing of Covid and fraudulent Conservative Covid contracts (Which cost £3.5 BILLION).
That is to say nothing of David Cameron SLASHING health and safety; which led to the Lakanal and Grenfell Tower block fires!
That is to say nothing of them LYING TO THE QUEEN to get permission to PROROGUE PARLIAMENT; which they did to avoid answering for themselves; and losing votes in Parliament.
That is to say nothing of Partygate; or the many times Boris tried to send us back to work, which killed THOUSANDS MORE PEOPLE with Covid, every time.
National assets sold off.
Public Services hijacked by private companies.
The NHS in tatters.
That is off the top of my head. The full list is FAR LONGER..!!
The FULL LIST OF CHARGES going back to 1979 should be on everyone's lips.

Cancelling the "HS2" vanity project is all that has to be done in order to revive the economy to its previous state. It will take years to construct, and after it is finished, no one will use it anyway. Reduce spending on help to other countries; already, our contributions are simply too high. It is the responsibility of the government to cut waste. Recent reports have shown that our government has thrown away 17 billion. There you have it; there is no requirement to impose further tax burdens on the working class.

Drop the windfall tax on UK producers (in the North sea and on UK territory) to encourage more oil and gas production.

So government spending has been way out of control since the Conservatives took office thirteen years ago and they must protect that "out of control" spending at any cost.
Mainly on Welfare and the NHS with the over 65's burning through 40% of the entire NHS budget and 45% of all welfare spending.
Then we had Covid where we all had our civil liberties taken away and the economy trashed with a government "burn" of around £350 billion. Turns out 11/12 of all Covid related deaths were the over 60's and 2/3 of those were the over 80's. Covid was never a threat to anyone under 60 in reasonable health.
And now the Conservatives want to make sure that the economy stays wrecked so we can keep the elderly going at everyone else's expense.
Sixth largest economy in the world and we were already at record levels of taxation (since the 1950's) before this budget and yet no one gets to benefit or enjoy that as we're all now so busy saving everything (none of which is our fault or even needs saving)
My God you're a nation of moronic failures that love to snatch defeat from the jaws of success every single time. Enjoy your failed state, fools.
Edit: And don't forget your mantra: "Immigration is great for the economy". You would have thought we'd be booming, having picked up eleven million since the turn of the millennium. Turns out all these "wonderful" economic migrants are actually costing us quite a few billion a year (around 3..11 depending on who you ask)
