Coronavirus: Why we touch our faces and how to stop it – BBC News

Published

on

Several medical officials across the world have warned people to avoid touching their face as a key way to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Often when issuing the warning, they’ve gone on to – you guessed it – put their hands on their face.

But why do we touch our faces in the first place? And is it that easy to just stop doing it all of a sudden?

We spoke to psychologist Natasha Tiwari.

Sorry but this is completely inconsistent and inept. When we think or are told, 'don't touch your face,' we immediately want to touch our faces. I used to teach this to middle and high school students. In a class of 15 year olds, almost always, two students will immediately touch their faces. Not to be funny or out of defiance, they just lack the self-control, or have five minutes less of it than adults.. The expert says we touch our faces to self-calm. Ok. But then she goes on to say don't wear make-up, use contact lenses, which are sources of contact and itching, not the need for self-calming.

For Buddhists telling someone, 'don't touch your face is like their instruction: 'Now, don't think about elephants." The trick is not to not think about elephants, that's impossible. The real trick is to think about something else. The deep brain only hears positive messages. It's almost always better to give a positive instruction than a negative. Instead of 'don't touch…' think, when my face itches, DO rub my leg.
With skin touch and pain this is easy and well known. Distraction. Rub a finger on your thigh. or on a sensitive area like your wrist. The basic principle is you can't think of two touches at the same time, so the doctor slap slap slaps the spot he's going to sink the 4" needle – and you can look right at the needle as it goes in and not feel it. Itching seems to be a completely different problem. I haven't had much success with distraction. So far what works best is either clean your hand and scratch, or take the time to wash your face, maybe moisturize.

With heating systems in the colder months, dryness, a bit of grime, our faces itch, the sides of our eyes, and nose.

The best I've been able to do is when my face itches to immediately use hand sanitizer. Then I can rub the itchy spot. Far far from ideal, but better. I do find it helpfully distracting to try to put the alcohol based Purell on my hands and then scratch an itch near my eye without getting the alcohol in my eye. For about 5 years I've been successful. I've also tried using some cortisone cream on my face as a prophylaxis against itching, but it seems to have no effect.

You need to train yourself to stop doing it. You can learn by practicing endlessly at home where hopefully you should be safe. If you fail at home force yourself to go through the full hand washing routine, it will get tiresome very soon. It took me two weeks to learn to stop doing it.

I don't worry about it too much at home. It's when I'm at work or anywhere else in public I try not to touch my face. Luckily, I got some hand sanitizer before it all flew off the shelf so I just sanitize my hands before touching my face. If you don't take care of that itch, you'll probably just scratch it later when your not paying attention. If you don't have hand sanitizer, just try not to touch your face in public until you can wash your hands. The main thing is to be mindful of what you touch. If you touch something that many other people have likely touched also, then consider your hands potentially contaminated and don't touch anything you don't want contaminated until you know your hands are clean.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
