Last night in Kansas, President Trump dropped a word no president should ever say. Rallying for Senator Roger Marshall at a Wichita rally, Trump described him as a “Shylock-type guy” — a well-known antisemitic slur — and the backlash was instant.

Trump was defending Marshall over a New York Times report that the senator, a practicing OB-GYN, reportedly sued more than 700 patients over unpaid medical bills, with some lawsuits leading to arrest warrants over missed court dates. Marshall’s lawyer denies he had any role in the arrest warrants, and Marshall’s team calls the report a hit job.

The Anti-Defamation League condemned Trump’s word as deeply troubling and irresponsible. The White House stayed silent. This isn’t the first time: Trump used the same term at an Iowa rally last year, then claimed he had never heard it that way.

With the midterms two weeks away — Marshall faces Democrat Adam Hamilton in a Cook Political Report Toss-Up race, and Kansas hasn’t elected a Democratic senator since 1932 — could this cost Marshall the seat?
