Revealing the hidden casualties of one elite Russian regiment in Ukraine – BBC Newsnight
Four members of the Canadian military have died and dozens were injured in a major fire at a base in the province of Alberta on Saturday.
Addressing the nation on Sunday from Ottawa, Prime Minister Mark Carney described it as “one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime”.
The fire broke out at about 16:00 local time (22:00 GMT) on Saturday at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, one of the country’s busiest military training bases, and is now contained. Its cause is still unclear, but officials said it did not appear tied to “terrorist activity”.

Protesters and anti-riot police have clashed in Albania’s main cities in scenes not witnessed for decades.
Government buildings have been attacked, as have some private businesses.
The country’s capital Tirana has seen months of protests from an anti-government “Flamingo” movement, but the clashes have now spread to the main cities of Durrës, Shkodër, Lezhë and Vlora in the west, Gjirokastër in the south and Korçë in the east.
The new demonstrations were announced as a student movement, ostensibly demanding action by the government to help with the high cost of education fees and books – and the higher cost of living.

Trump ‘completely wrong’ to restrict support for Ukraine, Italian minister tells BBC | BBC News
Italy’s defence minister has said it was a “complete mistake, a major mistake” for the US to limit access to satellite systems and intelligence used by Ukraine to defend itself against Russian attacks.
Guido Crosetto warned in a BBC interview that any such move by US President Donald Trump’s administration “makes absolutely no sense” and risked prolonging Russia’s full-scale invasion rather than helping to bring peace. Trump has denied asking for satellite access to be suspended.
Crosetto’s comments continue Italy’s sharpening criticism of the US.

Saudi Arabia’s energy minister has threatened a ‘serious’ response to the deadly Houthi attacks on Riyadh’s international airport. Flights remain suspended and are expected to remain so for days.
The Houthis said they launched the attacks in retaliation for “brutal Saudi aggression” against areas they control in western Yemen.

"D-Day casualties for the airborne divisions were calculated in August 1944 as 1,240 for the 101st Airborne Division and 1,259 for the 82nd Airborne. Of those, the 101st suffered 182 killed, 557 wounded, and 501 missing. For the 82nd, the total was 156 killed, 347 wounded, and 756 missing.
Casualties through June 30 were reported by VII Corps as 4,670 for the 101st (546 killed, 2217 wounded, and 1,907 missing), and 4,480 for the 82nd (457 killed, 1440 wounded, and 2583 missing)"

Russian official: “I visited the regiments and they are fine, and they know why they are fighting.”
Translation: “I spoke to the few in the regiment that are still alive, and they know what they are allowed to say (or get thrown out windows, jailed,shot, poisoned….whatever the dictator likes.)

What a terrible waste of lives, and foolish at every level….not just the most important individual and family loss, but that these are young lives Russia can’t really afford to lose (with an estimated million dead or fled), and with Russia having a shrinking and aging population pre-war…for many years.

If you guys informed and cared for Ukrainians you will be revealing the obvious, they are also suffering tremendous casualties. If Russia has suffered 100,000 casualties, the Ukraine has suffered 30,000. Is that simple, western propaganda is pathetic and is 30% as bad as Russian propaganda, still they think they are ethical, free, and are reporting, but they don't.

I find it quite amusing that Spewtin is now considering sending "elite" paratroopers to defend the East Ukrainian stolen lands. If they perform anywhere near as well as they did in Kyiv in the opening days of this cowardly war, they'll be history just after they land.

Sending young healthy men to die for one man’s ambition, is a disgraceful use of Russians army. Putin would have gone down in history as a great intelligent leader before this war, now he will go down in history as a disgrace to his people. So sad for all the lives lost on both sides, targeting civilians by Russia will tarnish their futures and be remembered as a cowardly act.
