In just two and a half months, the war in Ukraine has claimed tens of thousands of lives and flattened countless communities.
The intensity of this struggle has shocked many, even those military professionals across the world who now find themselves watching, trying to understand what lessons to draw about war and its future conduct.
How long could this conflict continue? Could we see a WWI stalemate? Are we witnessing the death of the tank?
Newsnight’s diplomatic and defence editor Mark Urban has been scouring Russian and Ukrainian accounts online and speaking to expert observers to discover more about what those early lessons might be.

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.
In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.
He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.
Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.
Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.
The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.
It comes after another night of strikes between the US and Iran, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it hit two UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and targeted US facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.
The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.
Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.
Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.
President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.

Why not this man has stopped? What this man wanted? Invading a an independent State? Killing it's people. Where is justice for those who killed by him? If he wants something more destructive.. ok. Let him used his nuclear weapons. Let's see his toughness. If wants to sacrifice his own people. His millions of people to die. Ok. Push him now. Before the west has been fed up with all of his bluffings. Is he the who was afraid of his threats. Ok do it now with all your threats. The world has been waiting now. Lets see if he can do his threats. If he was brave enough. NATO might strike first. Then lets see who will exterminate on the face of the planet. Fancy that: another snippet of news from the largest war in Europe since WW2! And this while the BBC is fighting its own heroic battle against the advanced stages of IAD (Infantile Attention-span Disorder).

Sooner or later we’re just going to have robots with a race for the most sophisticated AI fighting other robots in proxy wars in pocketed battles all throughout the front lines.. in this case Advanced microchips are going to be @ a premium. And guess what that tiny Island country Taiwan produces just over 50% of the microchips that are critical to the functioning of this advanced military equipment going forward, not to mention Phones, cars & other consumer electronics this is the main reason why Taiwan is very much on Xi Jinping’s menu that is a huge balance of power control technologically going forth into the future.

Lets do this analysis. What if the War drags on for several years and the Ukraine pushes the Russians out of Crimea and the Donbass, how much of Russia do you think the Ukraine will capture before there is peace ? And wouldn't that throw Putin's plans to re-conquer the old Russian Czarist Territory. And why don't you entertain what will happen if Russia attacks Poland ? How far into Russia can NATO push before the Nuclear trigger is pulled ? How can NATO and Russia fight on Russian soil without triggering tactical nukes ? Russia is still married to the doctrine of kicking NATO back to its 1997 borders and to dissuade Russia of this political aim, isn't it necessary at some point that NATO aggressively engages Russia and decidedly beats the Russian and pushes them back well behind the current Russian border. What will NATO'S terms of peace be for the War in Ukraine and the war that follows ? And what of the continued diatribe from Russia and China that the old uni-polar world (which did not exist except in the disturbed Russian Cold Warriors mind who failed to recognize the USSR collapsed from within) ? How is the West going to address and do battle with this Chinese /Russian collation which has clearly been at war with the West for 20 years but we just failed to notice. Is the West going to re-Militarize and if so, lets do it with overwhelming production of all vehicles of war, land , sea and air so that it is clear that the West can defeat both Russia and China, at the same time, and do so clearly and with great advantage. These are the REAL issues we are facing. Lets do some examination of these truths.
