Cost of living crisis | Baby bank referrals on the rise

Published

on

As the need for food banks has increased during the cost of living crisis, so has the use of baby banks – which supply struggling parents with cots, prams, nappies, clothes and more for their newborns and younger children. Baby Basics UK was founded in Sheffield in 2009 and now has 56 centres across Britain.

The charity is currently facing its highest referrals, and demand for their help has jumped by almost a third, while donations have slowed down.

You've got to remember, parent's didn't need all this fuss for their babies back in the day. In my mother's time she had any old blankets, basic clothes, a buggy, breast milk, reusable nappies & a cot. In my grandmother's time she had, a blanket, basic clothes, reusable nappies, breast milk & a chest of drawer as a cot. Babies don't need much. So something has gone very very wrong, in government & in people's minds.

Imagine you are beaten by English nationalist in Scotland if you utter scottish/galeic words or put/pin/hold scottish flag. That is what happened with Hungarians living in west ukraine (who were cut from their mother country in 1920 by Treaty of Trianon). I live 50 miles form Ukraine border and we know. there is even a law, you can check, which forbids in school to use your own language in school. If you use/pin/waive Hungarian flag there you are beaten until you bleed. Same applies for Russians there. But you in the west media bubble do not hear these. The Minsk agreement was to assure these rights but Ukraine ignored it with the support of the west.
Zelensky has a multi million euro palace in Tuscana, Italy, he has had it even before he became president. Where do you think that money came from? His wealth is estimated 1,5 billion USD. Ukraine is one of the most corrupt countries in the world and is far from being a democracy
Russia cannot be beaten only talks give peace but USA does not want it. Even if Ukraine wins back all territories, what is guarantee Russia will not go back some months later? Nothing.
Ukraine is in ruins, the economy is bankrupted, the people fled, those who stayed are in life lasting war shock. The war does not seem to end soon. There is no winner in this.
The solution is to respect the concern of Russia and for Ukraine to respect minority rights.
So pin the Ukrainian flag onto your shirt and enjoy the western style of living while it lasts.

Apparently more and more families are struggling, yet my brother works for a well-known package holiday firm and they're working flat out because so many people are going on holiday. People should get their priorities in order – ditch the phone contracts, the sky contracts, the holidays etc. It's boring, not fun but it's doable – I've done it myself on a low budget.

It’s sad that people don’t have for essential, but looking at those piles of disposable nappies made me wonder why not to donate people reusable nappies? They are healthier and cheaper in the long run. I used them with my daughter since birth until she was potty trained. Also, it’s important thing to donate infant formula, but if money is invested in educating families on importance of breastfeeding and how to do it in first place, I believe this would really help people with their anxiety about the future and to be less dependent on this broken system.

Meanwhile the government spend 7 million a day on illegals from France you couldn't make this shit up think its time everyone got together and told the government to fuck off

  23. @Sarah-ft8jr

I’m sympathetic that times are very tough for many right now and back when mine were little we were very poor at times. However for us some things had priority. First was always food and essentials for our children. Parents no matter how poor will always have some form of money coming in each month. Universal credit although minimal is still roughly £300 a month per child and that’s without the £80 a month child benefit. So at a bare minimum youd have enough money to feed and put nappies on your baby. If these things aren’t being bought, then the money is going on other things. I didn’t even put bills before feeding my babies.

USA printed 600 years worth of dollars in one single year.

This alone causes a global economic crisis. News ignoring it.

    January 12, 2024 at 4:41 pm

I was a single mother in poverty before turning things around. It was a struggle, but the system does give women enough money to get everything they need for their babies. Maybe not enough for treats and luxuries (and to be fair, that's not what it's intended for) but it's enough to get by. I'm sorry, but I just can't see how any parent in this country can't afford something as basic as blankets for their baby unless there are other issues at play.

  26. @1320613

    January 12, 2024 at 4:41 pm

It’s terrible that we are spending over 7 million pounds a day caring for illegal immigrants when our own citizens are finding life difficult.

  27. @williamsdavid5243

    January 12, 2024 at 4:41 pm

Why would you have a baby if you haven't got the means to look after him / her .. they were probably hoping the state would pick up the tab

  28. @MAT-UK1978

    January 12, 2024 at 4:41 pm

Jesus, don’t have a baby if you can’t afford to look after it! I despair at this attitude nowadays that people can do what they want and a handout from someone else will pay for it.

After losing so much to stock market, One best investment decision I ever made afterwards was investing in financial markets. Which has earned me $34,970 profit every 14days lately. Trust me guys it pays a lot.

A massive indictment of society that so many babies have single mothers or parents who need handouts.

Watch as Will Kensington expresses concern about the state of the UK, arguing that Downing Street is no longer a place of power but has instead become Britain’s most expensive Airbnb.
