“Long Covid” leaves thousands struggling months after infection – BBC News
The head of the NHS in England says hundreds of thousands of people could be suffering the effects of what’s know as long Covid.
For most people Covid-19 is a relatively mild illness which passes quickly. But many others are left struggling with symptoms for months afterwards.
Some can be exhausted by a short walk while others are experiencing much more severe symptoms.
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by medical correspondent Fergus Walsh.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News
The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.
In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News
President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.
He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.
Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.
Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.
The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

New explosions near Iranian port cities, says state media | BBC News
Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.
It comes after another night of strikes between the US and Iran, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it hit two UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and targeted US facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.
The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.
Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News
The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.
Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.
President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.

2:56 It is shocking to see that man on an exercise bike. Exercise exacerbates patients and makes them worse. I have long-term fatigue from an infection from 2016 I haven't recovered from. Doctors should learn more about a disease before subjecting patients to vigorous, unhelpful and harmful testing. Furthermore, the willingness to do such testing suggests that they believe long covid is psychological and not the serious physical illness that is so truly is.

I had a whooping cough after having the vaccine. I was sick for five years with my lymphatic system swollen. I also had the nerves in the back of one eye swollen ,causing headaches and facial drop on one side of my face. I had to have sinus surgery and the bone chambers shaved. And am well now. I'm wondering could other respiratory diseases do the same. Leave toxins in the sinuses.

If the mainstream medical world has done precious little to help people suffering from these so called "invisible illnesses" for the past 40 years plus (ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia etc.) I sadly foresee long covid being treated in the same way and kicked into the long grass and ignored. Its the same old story if a marker cannot be found using current methods and understanding you will be deemed as a hypochondriac,an attention seeker, depressed, anxious, a problem patient,a time waster etc, etc.
If one of these types of diseases has NEVER affected you personally or someone you care about its easy to be dismissive of them, but the day one affects you suddenly your attitudes will change and you will want effective help and treatment, but you will quickly find none exists.
Find me someone who is suffering an illness and thinks its not a problem and its all a bit of a joke, and doesn't want help to get well again and I will eat my hat.
I appreciate those Drs and scientists who DON'T look the other way and are pursuing treatments for an effective cure to these difficult conditions.
Clearly the human body is complex and doesn't always play by the currently understood rules to recovery as we think we know them. Opportunity for world wide scientific collaboration lays ahead and a chance for that science to shine and tackle a tough problem.
Only time will tell if I am right about my prediction, but I look forward to being proved wrong.
Place your bets now to see which way this will go, but ignoring a problem is never going to solve it.

i am very angry at why it has taken a pandemic for medical staff to recognise that ME/CFS is a genuine medical condition, i and so many others have been pushed down and made to feel as though our medical conditions are made up. patients with ME/CFS have been silenced, ignored and dismissed for so many years! all of these things lead to a lack of funding for people like me, this then leads to a lack of understanding for the condition. i developed chronic fatigue syndrome from a viral infection in 2018 and ever since then ive been very ill and had so many problems with my health, it’s been a huge rollercoaster ride and very difficult to live with as many medical staff don’t actually believe it’s a real thing and don’t know how to help which obviously makes day to day life hard, i currently don’t have a proper education because of this, i won’t be able to sit my gcse next year and i probably won’t get into a collage from not having any gcses, this debilitating illness has ruined so many lives and needs to be talked about more throughout the medical community and get to a point where no more people are silenced! i have recently noticed that “long covid” has been used across the media and it is basically caused from the coronavirus, this is a form of chronic fatigue and it’s developed from having any sort of virus, not just covid and it’s amazing to finally see how more people are realising that CFS is a real thing but it also makes me upset because for many years we have been fighting to show the medical staff that it’s a real thing! i hope my fellow sufferers finally get the justice we deserve for the amount of times we have been pushed away, and i hope more funding can go towards this!
@lydiep6814

I am utterly perplexed and well as angered as to why it’s taken a pandemic for medical staff to recognise that ME/CFS is a genuine medical condition. People with ME/CFS have been silenced, ignored and dismissed. All of these things have lead to a lack of funding for the condition and thus a lack of understanding.
The new research for me/CFS is promising yet beyond infuriating. The funding
just hasn’t been there for medical staff to fully grasp and understand ME/CFS. Patients gave therefore been denied help and been miss understood by medical staff for years and years.
I hope that the pandemic funding will have a more positive outcome for those with l ME/CFS and a greater understanding from medical staff and others. I’m hoping this pandemic will allow medical staff to have more education about ME/CFS.

Even the economist published that only 1% of sufferers suggest long term exhaustion and pain. This is a feature of even vitamin deficiencies and other diseases, it is not unique of just covid. A lot of them are physiological, I.e living in n environment that gives you negative input. It still doesn't justify the massive lockdowns and putting off other so called "not urgent" treatments.

Fatigue, muscle pains, joint pains aren't exclusive to Covid infections. The Influenza virus (and other viruses) can cause this too and many practisioners often overlook it intentionally as they don't know what exactly causes it and they don't have the time to dig deep into various studies and connect them carefully. After having something like this myself, I read lots of studies from influenza to covid to bacterial and fungal pathogens and toxins to microbiota to autoimmunity and other immunological conditions and I think those muscle pains, some of the neurological symptoms and joint pains are due to a long lasting change in microbiota and host immune response.
Viral infections can re-program your immune cells directly (via imprinting B-lymphocytes or make macrophages change their genome) and indirectly via a change in microbiota (that can, for example, lead to higher Th1 or Th2-lymphocyte numbers)
I think problem with some of these people is that they had a severe case, but not as severe as to be hospitalized and so a potential secondary infection might have went unnoticed. And there are many ways oppurtunistic pathogens can persist where they don't belong for a very long time. And most of those mechanism can be linked to the development of autoimmunity. Some of the toxins of those pathogens are also a causing agent of demyelination and degeneration of the nervous system in MS patients. However, you don't even need to be infected, as gut colonialization and an impenetrable gut is enough for some toxins to be released into your blood stream. Now, many doctors already do test people like them for autoimmune diseases, but not every disorder involves autoantibodies and screening for infections may fail because blood may only contain the pathogens' genes, toxins and other metabolic products, but not the pathogens themselves. There are gene sequencing blood tests which enable testing for different pathogens in one test, but they are quite new and not commonly applied yet. And there are surprisingly few laboratories which are able to check your blood for bacterial or fungal toxins.
Now, I don't think that all those people shown have severe "end stage" autoimmune diseases or other immune conditions, but their symptoms are vere similar to those of many autoimmune disorders in their early stages. And sometimes, time is enough for those people to fully recover, but unfortunately, that won't be the case for all of them. And of course, the virus itself may also have heavily damaged the brains and other organs, but one would be quite surprised of the extent to which the human body is able to regenerate. (Some patients with autoimmune diseases said to be incurable, fully recovered slowly upon recieving antibiotics or antimycotics. But we only have some evidence here and there and lots of circumstantial evidence/indicators so treating people with those drugs should be a last resort as it also can harm them more than it benefits them if the wrong microbe gets killed. (and of course, liver or kidney failure due to the drugs beeing toxic too)
PS. Oh and I forgot Lyme-disease (and infections due to other borreliae than Borrelia burgdorferi) can also cause those symptoms. It's also one of those persistic bacterial infections even though the bacteria aren't considered as a part of the microbiota of a healthy human beeing.
