Coronavirus: N.Ireland lockdown eased more than rest of UK – BBC News

Published

on

Northern Ireland has decided to relax its lockdown more than any other part of the UK, despite previously having stricter rules to control coronavirus. Up to six people will now be able to meet outdoors in Northern Ireland. Drive in church services and cinemas will also be allowed .

The government in Scotland has made clear that restrictions there will not be eased for some time yet..

In England the government has said it wants many primary school children to return to their classes at the beginning of June. But the details of how that would work are still unclear and many teachers and parents oppose the move.

Research from the Institute for Fiscal studies has found that children from less well-off households are spending far less time on educational activities while at home during lockdown.

Fiona Bruce presents BBC News at Ten reports from Ireland Correspondent Emma Vardy, Scotland Editor Sarah Smith and Education Editor Branwen Jeffreys.

Well that proved to be a stupid decision. Idiotic Northern Ireland ministers always pandering for the votes instead of leading. Contradictory advice from medical advisors. The health minister thinks it’s great that we have 80% compliance on buses with mask wearing. What an idiot. It’s the 20% that are spreading the virus.

If you're smart.. stay home a while longer and watch the impact of the easing over the next 3-5wks. Or just look at what is happening elsewhere. If you can work from home, do it!

The republic's 5km rule is stupid. That's what you get when you have a doctor in charge. I can go 5km into Galway but can't go across the city. Whatever germs are there can be brought into the city by someone living across town. Northern Ireland seems far more sensible.

North and south we are 1. Protestant or Catholic. This is our island so I speak as 1,cause most of us see. I think doesn't happen in England. I'm not in Scotland or Wales because it's too close. But they got the sea to block it. I really think this is a horrendous act.Protestant here long enough, or Catholic I think you might agree with me. there was intercepted information from secret services from Israel – in the fall in October, human parasites will announce a new wave of the pandemic again and several times more will increase quarantine measures until people are arrested and infected through testing of healthy people and their destruction in concentration camps. Each person is controlled with an exit ban from home and getting money from doctors for false exposure about a pandemic. Be careful not to believe that you are fake TV and your main newspapers.

In the past years a lot of people died for all sorts of contagious flus but no one promoted that…
And a lot of people died anyways…

How is it possible people to only die of Coronavirus these days?

Exercise Cygnus, a pandemic simulation conducted in 2016, found that the impacts in care homes would be catastrophic unless new measures were put in place. The government insists that it heeded the findings of this exercise and changed its approach accordingly. If this is correct, by allowing untested patients to be shifted from hospitals to care homes, while failing to provide the extra support and equipment the homes needed and allowing agency workers to move freely within and between them, it knowingly breached its own protocols. Tens of thousands of highly vulnerable people were exposed to infection.

Be happy you're not in Scotland.. after an exhausting 12 hour shift (hospital workers) the last thing we want to do is run around in circles near our home, but it's the only scraps the tyrants have thrown down to us (unlimited exercise). Some of us deal with deaths in our job, relaxing on a beach would be the perfect antidote, yet we are not even allowed to sit outdoors, let alone meet someone from a different household to talk about happier topics. But queue to access a supermarket a la Soviet around unmasked strangers of all ages and walks of life? No problem. Outdoor sports? Banned. Recycling centres? Shut. Takeaways and off licence shops? Open!! Masks? Not compulsory! Some parts of the country are beginning to look like Delhi as fly tipping becomes a trend. No garden to enjoy the rare warm day? Tough. We can march our children down the street in a single file. Mental health lines are a lottery – good luck getting through if you are on the verge of suicide. Thanks SNP. Now I'll just tight and wait for the Stasi to smash my door down and arrest me for daring to speak out against this tyranny.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.

It comes after another night of strikes between the US and Iran, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it hit two UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and targeted US facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.

The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.

Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
