Bangladesh rally attracts tens of thousands to demand new elections – BBC News

Published

on

Tens of thousands of opposition supporters in Bangladesh have gathered in the capital Dhaka for a rally demanding the government step down.

Security in the city is tight and many people are staying off the streets.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, known as the BNP, has accused the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of ruining the economy and stifling democracy.

But Bangladesh’s government has denied it is cracking down on freedom of expression.

In an interview with the BBC, the country’s Foreign Minister Abdul Momen dismissed suggestions his government was stifling free speech, stressing that his nation, formed in 1971 after a war with Pakistan, was founded “to uphold democracy, human rights, and justice”.

There is no democracy in Bangladesh. Human rights and voting rights have been taken away by the government. Judiciary gives judgments according to the government's mind. Judges are working for the government to destroy democracy. Police are killing opposition workers indiscriminately.

Police forces are killing all opposition political parties in Bangladesh. Police has established dictatorship in Bangladesh. The police are also running the judiciary in their own way by fear of weapons. The police want to establish the dictatorship permanently with maximum force. I appeal to all the international circles to send their military forces and help the people to restore the independence of Bangladesh.

It's 2023, but it amazes me that we the common people of Bangladesh are still fighting for our right to speak freely, for our right to vote and to fight against of living cost of all materials and highly corrupt administrative system. You don't have minimum civil rights in this country when you don't like government injustice and corruption. The people of our country have been brutally exploited for the last 15 years by a woman with terrible and foul taste. WE WANT FREEDOM FROM THIS EVIL REGIME.

The legal advisers helping migrants pretend to be gay to stay in the UK | BBC Newscast

Published

on

Today, an undercover BBC investigation has found evidence of law firms and legal advisors helping migrants pretend to be gay to get asylum.

Migrants were advised to take staged photos at nightclubs, attend LGBT events and to go to GPs pretending to be depressed to obtain medical evidence to support their cases.

Adam and Chris are joined by BBC politics investigation correspondent Billy Kenber, who uncovered the story. In response to our findings, the Home Office said: “Anyone found trying to exploit the system will face the full force of the law, including removal from the UK.”

Plus, Adam also checks in with Faisal, who’s in the US at the IMF’s annual conference. He fills us in on the indirect war of words between Rachel Reeves and her US counterpart, Scott Bessent.

I watched Hungary’s 16-year Viktor Orbán era crumble | BBC News

Published

on

Hungary has seen a historic election result. After 16 years in power, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been ousted from the role.

Péter Magyar’s Tisza party won a comfortable “super majority” with two-thirds of the seats in parliament, meaning the party will be able to change the constitution.

The defeat will mean a huge reset of Hungary’s relationships with the rest of the world.

Orbán has been a close partner of both US President Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, and he had become a big thorn in the side of the EU and Ukraine.

The BBC’s Europe Editor Katya Adler was in Budapest as the election unfolded, and takes you with her in this video as a historic defeat takes place.

Americans react to President Donald Trump’s feud with Pope Leo XIV | BBC News

Published

on

Americans are reacting to President Donald Trump’s escalating feud with Pope Leo XIV and the backlash surrounding an AI-generated image depicting the president as a Jesus-like figure, which has since been deleted.

On Monday, Trump posted a lengthy Truth Social message attacking the pontiff, who has been a vocal critic of the US and Israeli military operations in Iran.

He criticised the Pope, calling him “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy”.

The Pope said on Monday that he has “no fear” of the Trump administration or “speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do”.
