A new personalised vaccine given in combination with a drug has stopped skin cancer returning in patients during a trial, representing a potentially watershed moment in cancer treatment. Scientists used mRNA technology, which was used for some Covid-19 vaccines.
But that technology – and vaccines more generally – have become increasingly controversial in the United States since the Covid-19 pandemic. The Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, is a vaccine sceptic.
In August 2025 cancelled $500m (ÂŁ376m) in funding for mRNA vaccine research. The move impacted 22 projects being led by major pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer and Moderna, for vaccines against bird flu and other viruses, according to Kennedyâs department.
We speak to Tom Whipple, host of the BBCâs Inside Science programme, about the science of this new vaccine. And we ask how funding cuts for vaccine research could impact health outcomes not just for Americans, but for the world.

Historic first as Chinese robot beats Usain Bolt’s 100m world record at Beijing games | BBC News
A Chinese humanoid robot has run 100 metres in 9.39 seconds in a preliminary heat at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, surpassing the men’s world record time held by Jamaican sprinting great Usain Bolt.
Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, won its heat at the opening of the games’ second edition. The robot overtook â smartphone maker Honor’s Lightning near the finish after falling behind early in the race. Lightning finished in 9.47 seconds, also faster than the 9.58-second record Bolt set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin.
The results marked a remarkable improvement from last year’s inaugural games, when Tiangong Ultra won the 100 metres in 21.50 seconds. Tiangong also won the world’s first humanoid robot half-marathon, held in Beijing last year.
The 100 metres is among 51 events at the games, which include football, dancing and contests to complete industrial tasks.
China is promoting humanoid robots as a strategic emerging industry, with policymakers and companies betting that advances in AI and hardware will accelerate their use in manufacturing, logistics and consumer applications.
Investor enthusiasm for the sector was underscored recently when shares in Unitree, China’s best-known humanoid robot maker, jumped more than five fold in its Shanghai trading debut, giving the company a market value of about $50 billion.
This year’s â games have drawn 2,056 robots from 666 teams across 16 countries and six continents, up from 280 teams at the inaugural event.

clean energy clean water The biggest idea I am trying to express is tunneling aqueducts from the coast, in this case the west coast of the USA inland to feed combination geothermal power and sea water desalination plants. The idea seems to be so big that no one has considered it possible but I believe it is not only possible but it is necessary. For over a century the fossil water contained in aquifers has been pumped out to feed agriculture, industry and municipal water needs. The natural water cycle cant refill fossil water deposits that were filled 10,000 years ago when the glaciers melted after the last ice age. Without refilling these aquifers there is not much of a future for the region of the United states. As a result ground levels in some areas of the San Joaquin Valley have subsided by more than 30 feet. Similar fossil water depletion is happening in other regions all around the world. TBM and tunneling technology has matured and further developments in the industry are poised to speed up the tunneling process and it's these tunnels that are the only way to move large volumes of water from the ocean inland. The water is moved inland to areas where it can be desalinated in geothermal plants producing clean water and power. In many cases the water will recharge surface reservoirs where it will be used first to make more hydro power before being released into rivers and canal systems. It's very important however to not stop tunneling at these first stops but to continue several legs until the water has traveled from the ocean under mountain ranges to interior states. Along the way water will flow down grade through tunnels and rise in geothermal loops to fill mountain top pumped hydro batteries several times before eventually recharging several major aquifers. What I am proposing is essentially reversing the flow of the Colorado River Compact. Bringing water from the coast of California first to mountaintop reservoirs then to the deserts of Nevada and Arizona and on to Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming. This big idea looks past any individual city or states problems and looks at the whole and by using first principles identifies the actual problem and only solution.
A better future is possible.

We use O physics! This is being written in the UK, but he applies equally well all over the world. It is high school science. By definition the clear water down to 0° C, boils and a one metre of vacuum. Even ice goes directly into water vapour!
I advocate using a 20 Watts solar vacuum pump. 1 W will boil off one metre of water a second. The other 19 W will transfer it into a high tank or little reservoir.

We have had hardly any new reservoirs built in the UK for the past 60 years! We are told that they are very expensive to build. The UK GIVE AWAY over FOURTEEN BILLION every year to help others around the world, and WE here in the UK are squeezed every day to pay for this CRIME! ALL foreign "aid" should be stopped, and WE the UK public should be given a vote on whether any money should be sent abroad, which we actually BORROW in the first place

In Italy (Tuscany, here), the leaves of the trees have started yellowing/browning and falling due to extreme drought conditions. It's becoming surreal. We are used to seeing drought periods, but not of that extense and severity.

The water companeis do not own money through hosepipe bans. And at night we have a massive excess electricity to drive pumps.
They should dip a waighted snorkel into the sea or river. An just one W of electrical power, will cause a one metre of the sea or river water will cause a one metre of liquid water to boil into 1000 l of water vapour.

since the eighties water has become politial and manipulated along with the weather, water used to included in our rates then the water companies came a long, then they privatatised the water and then water rationing began, exactly like the 00.1% are vaccinating us and they want us to drive their electric cars and they want us to eat their bugs … and after a few weeks of warm weather they are calling a drought … wakey wakey!

The drought seems to be affecting almost every part of the Earth but…I live close to the coast and tidal levels haven't changed either up or down. Where is the water going?
If glaciers are melting, lakes drying as the terra is and yet no change in sea levels? So, again…where is the water going?
If it is evaporating into the atmosphere, it should turn to rain. Obviously, there are catastrophic floods occuring in places which is considered unusual. The one place recieving more water is sea ice around Antarctica, but this is highly variable over time. The sea ice has been sufficient to stop ice breaking ships which normally plow these areas.
Is this connected to a solar minimum experienced over solar cycle 24?

The boss of Wessex Water, which has warned of a ban on ânon-essentialâ water use, has a 40ft swimming pool at his ÂŁ3 million home.
Colin Skellett, 77, earns ÂŁ1 million a year for running a water company that loses 70 million litres of water a day due to faulty infrastructure.
As it struggles to stop the leaks, it is telling customers to watch their usage â even with advice on pools.
