Should Burqas Be Banned? – TLDR Opinionated
In this episode of Opinionated, we discuss face coverings, and more specifically burqas. These controversial items of religious dress obscure the wearer’s identity, which makes some believe they’re a security threat. While others see the right to wear them as a fundamental human right. In this video, we discuss the arguments used on both sides and tell you what our viewers had to say in the Opinionated Survey.

They say face coverings are not specifically described in Islamic scripture, but I'm pretty sure "head" coverings are for women. It doesn't JUST say dress modestly. (Interestingly there are other stipulations, like I think that men must be covered from at least knees to belly button.) Thus, it is important, from the perspective of thinking about Islam at least, to differentiate between Burqa/Niqab bans and Hijab bans.

A ban on face coverings, well that's ironic now
@feradun2849
January 7, 2024 at 1:41 am
The bit about the Burka not being mentioned in islamic scriptures is only half true. While it is not mentioned in the Quran, it IS mentioned in the Hadith.
@blackfalcon1324

I dont support actively banning Burqas, but at the same time I am not a big advocate of religious exemptions.
@kelsoar
January 7, 2024 at 1:41 am
Sorry tldr on your your question posed at 9.29 because it's the non Muslim's country and throughout their history it has never been part of their ideology or identity because firstly let's not forget their are mosques yes mosques present in Britain especially after all their ties during the inquisition and the crusades and there is no ban or law preventing them from holding religious services now if you take that into consideration look at Saudi Arabia where it is illegal to have a non Islamic public service so yes they should be banned from all public places, transport and especially schools because it emphasizes difference instead of it being inclusive in the western European societies
@mysticia4582
January 7, 2024 at 1:41 am
@freddytang2128
January 7, 2024 at 1:41 am
I do find it rather interesting when western feminists defend the burka and essentially defend an aspect of Wahhabism
@a.h.s.3006
January 7, 2024 at 1:41 am
I remember there was a woman that was denied citizenship in France because she refused to shake the hands of the guy to whom she was supposed to give the oath of citizenship, the rational was that handshakes are a part of French culture and people no matter religious beliefs are not compatible with French citizenship if they refuse to shake hands.
And now we have COVID-19, facemasks are obligatory, and handshakes are forbidden.
If this isn't irony, I don't know what is.

interesting thought: if balaclavas are legal, why shouldn't burqas be legal- both conceal identity fully?
@Jamie-ro6sx

I personally would ban the burqa but hijabs can be worn. I'm a labour supporter. I think some of the colourful hijabs my colleagues wear look beautiful.

The Religion 'Islam' is divided by it's own beliefs. The Quran is made up of a bit of this and that including a book that was not accepted by the canons "The book of Enoch" which has no confirmed author and is considered more fiction than holy events. I say that as it's written in this book the reason why women had to cover their heads. the fallen angels were attracted to the earthly human females, so they would wear a cover over their heads to stop the angels from raping them, but when was the last time you've heard of an angel doing this? I rest my case.

@henrywoodside3906
January 7, 2024 at 1:41 am
first off, the women are not wearing the burka because they want to, it's because they are being forced to. second of all, people need to stop associating any and all critisism of the doctrine of islam with bigotry towards muslims as people
@rebeccamaule
January 7, 2024 at 1:41 am
Fun time to remember that the entire world has been wearing face coverings for like 18 months now. And I haven't caught a virus in that whole time. Maybe theres some more practical applications we're missing here.
@TheUndulyNoted
January 7, 2024 at 1:41 am
Personally I think all face coverings including the burka and the niqab, motorbike helmets, etc, should be banned in areas where there is potential for a terrorist attack or other crime, for example festivals, gigs, nightclubs, crowded public spaces, and areas where there is potential for thievery such as shops. Outside of this though, I don't agree with the gov sticking their nose into what people choose to do in their own homes and community spaces.
If there's a reasonable reason for the ban to be in a certain area, that's fine, but a blanket ban is simply Orwellian.

Catholic women only put a veil on in church when praying but not 24/7 they dress modest but do not cover there face at all, out side of church our hair or face is not covered so I don’t see how it’s the same

It's the Stockholm Syndrome effect. When a person is born into a society where they constantly have to hide themselves from the eyes of sexual predators, it becomes difficult for them to stop hiding themselves even when they are living in a free and safe society..
