There was a time when German rearmament would have caused shockwaves across Europe.

Since Ukraine’s invasion, Germany has completely transformed its foreign and defence policy, with an €100bn increase in defence spending.

But the German armed forces have seen decades of underfunding, so how much will this strengthen the country’s military capabilities?

And why was Germany so slow to change its foreign policy on Russia?

Newsnight’s Diplomatic Editor Mark Urban reports.

27 million dead Soviets 💀 27,000,000💀 Every single number of these had its own story. Every single number was once conceived, born and then died, usually at a very young age. An incredible number. During the four years of the German-Soviet war, that's 18,500 people EVERY DAY. Hourly 770. Every minute (!) almost 13. Unbelievable.

In Europe we are building up our armaments as a necessity

Putin and the CCP are absolutely at fault. We were cutting back our spending, but they started a new Cold War, so things had to change drastically

In those 22 milions deaths of soviet people there were about 5 to 8 milions Ukranians, 2 milions Poles, 2 milions Jews, 2 to 3 milions Balts, 3 to 4 milions Bielarussians. Only in Soviet Union I am not talking about Poland it self etc. – according to Norman Davies. So why is Germany not concerned about those nations? And why it doesnt recognise their loss? I am asking WHY?

I am a former german soldier. I was a gunner on the Leopard 2 A5 and A6 back in 2003. In that time I was proud to be there, in the german army. It is a shame to see how much they damaged our military and so our power to protect our country (or helping neighbours). So many years of incapable politicians.

Well, the Anglo-American duo has been coming up with excuses for German rearmament and concocting conflicts on the Continent ever since WWI. The peak of continental European independence from Atlanticist imperialism was when Europeans flipped Anglo-America off during the Operation Desert Fox in Iraq. That was sweet. Too bad they didn't have sufficient firepower to fuck them up once and for all and organize one big final Nurnberg trial for the real transatlanticist slave-trading KKK Nazis.

    For all these stoidi (right/left):
The Germans did their homework already twice.
The first time they defeated the Russians militarily and forced them to the Peace of Brest Litowsk. This treaty provided for Finns and Ukraine independence.
The stoidi in London nullified this treaty.
The second time the western stoidi supported the Russians.
I think after all this there are no further obligations for the Germans !

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
