Thirty years ago, Beijing’s Tiananmen Square became the focus for large-scale protests, which were crushed by China’s Communist rulers.
The events produced one of the most iconic photos of the 20th Century – a lone protester standing in front of a line of army tanks.

The country is seeing a surge in the number of civilian casualties, as Russian strikes exploit weaknesses in Ukraine’s air defence systems.

37 people have been killed after a huge explosion at an arms depot in Ukraine which was struck by a Russian drone. The ams storage facility was based near a residential areas on the outskirts of the capital, Kyiv. Hundreds of people have been evacuated from the area and a rescue operation is continuing, with fears that the death toll will rise.
Shells, mines and drones stored at the facility exploded in a massive blast that destroyed nearby homes nearby, including a care home for the elderly and disabled.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly criticised the location of the depot near people’s homes, saying an investigation had been launched into “terrible negligence on the part of those who stored explosive right next to people”.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence said that its forces had targeted “an ammunition depot”.
