Are you dense Peter? Giving a minority Russian population autonomy to rule themselves is the same damn thing as ceding more of your sovereign territory to Russia. Russia has already stolen. There is literally no difference. If these Russian people want to be Russian, move to Russia. Ukraine is a sovereign nation and should stay that way.

Peter is the kind of guy that would have told us to negotiate with Hitler.

Peter is great on certain topics, but him and his brother completely failed with communism and somehow this tends to weirdly still influence their perception of Russia vs the West.

There's a very simple way to end the war. Russia withdraws its troops which have invaded a sovereign state and are waging a war of aggression contrary to international law. Putin's aims are not to protect the Russian speakers of the Donbas. He wants to destroy Ukraine as a nation. He has stated that explicitly. That is genocide.

I'm glad Hitchens has changed his tune back to the type of reason I used to know him for. Unfortunately at the beginning of this in February 2022 his explanation was that Putin had "gone mad" as he put it. Still mystified at his comments when he knew, as he's admitting now, what led up to the conflict but I don't have the same regard for him as I once had. Even his understanding of what's going on there right now is way off. Shame.

    Well done, Peter Hitchens!
I haven't heard anybody else in Britain talk so sensibly about this Ukraine situation.

My respect for you has just increased. Well spoken, sir!

Russia is about to shut down Ukraine completely and there is nothing that can prevent it unless peace talks are resumed. That was Putin's plan all along. Both sides are bad, there is no "good guy" there. I agree there should be peace talks and now is the time as Ukraine has no other option left other than say the West coming in boots and all, which would lead to a world war so we certainly do not want that unless one is evil minded. This is not the same as some say as fighting Nazi Germany. It didn't have nukes. Russia has an ample supply of them and will use them as a last resort. I don't see peace talks being resumed though as long as Zelensky remains as the leader. He is like Nero and is willing to let his people die before surrendering. As for Putin, he is not good either but what I fear is whoever replaces him will be much worse.

Pete Hitchens is totally discredited on his benign view of Putin. His talk in praise of PutinBristol University Oct 13 2013 says it all.

  14. @hlysnan6418

    January 6, 2024 at 5:07 pm

Peter is not interested in taking sides. He's above all that!

  15. @catnap387

    January 6, 2024 at 5:07 pm

These armchair commentators like Hitchens with "I'm the voice of reason and common sense" smugness, with "I told you so" who does not take sides and relaxes on his well sprung armchair with glass of burgundy throws comments that make the blood boil. I know he was a strong communist in his early days, but does he seriously want to throw Ukrainians to the dogs for another century? Because that's what he proports when he talks of peace talks!!! Ukrainians want to live like he does, and be free to choose. His stance here makes me SICK!!!!

Hitchens says this, no outrage, Corbyn says it and everyone loses their shit

  17. @ttff4459

His plan seems to depend on the co-operation of Vlad Putin which has not been forthcoming.

There is no war in Ukraine. It's all theatre for MSM.

  19. @agrrb7

    January 6, 2024 at 5:07 pm

Finally somebody with a brain and some intelligence; something the dumb media and UK newspapers are lacking. This war didn`t start in February, and anybody who understands the history knows Hitchens is bang on with his short synopsis. When a democratic elected government was overthrown with the support of the US,UK and Europe. The puppet government then banned the Russian language, which makes it a racist government. What would the welsh do if the British government banned Welsh as a language? But its OK for Ukraine to do that without a squeak from the West.

  20. @Ballardian

    January 6, 2024 at 5:07 pm

I'm a left wing liberal and I agree 100% with what Peter's saying.

  21. @swordsman3951

    January 6, 2024 at 5:07 pm

This is exactly what Russia wants, concessions from Ukraine and the West. Once you do what putin wants, he will attack another country and then again there will be voices, "let's do whatever it takes to appease russia, give them some more territories". Chechnya, Georgia and now Ukraine. Who is next?

  22. @Uriel-Septim.

If you poke the bear, don`t act surprised if it bite back.

  23. @chrisfox9346

    January 6, 2024 at 5:07 pm

Peter is naive if her thinks this war isn't being dragged out deliberately by the people who control Putin and Zelensky. But then Peter thought the lockdowns were a result of stupidity of politicians rather than coordinated, deliberate action.

  24. @ThePierre58

    January 6, 2024 at 5:07 pm

Who is Maurice Glasman? This is Peter Hitchens…talking nonsense. Slava Ukraine.

Boris Johnson is acting out his Winston Churchill fantasies, at immense cost to Britain, Ukraine and the world.
