Canada ‘Sixties Scoop’: Indigenous survivors map out their stories – BBC News
Thousands of indigenous children in Canada were forcibly removed from their families between the 1950s and 1980s, in what is known as the “Sixties Scoop”.
They were put into non-indigenous homes by welfare agencies, in an attempt to assimilate them into mainstream culture.
Now survivors are mapping out their stories and finding solace in connecting with others.

Three members of his government, including Home Office minister Jess Phillips, have resigned, whilst scores of Labour MPs are calling for him to quit following a disastrous set of elections for the party last week.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among a number of cabinet ministers urging the prime minister to set out a departure timetable.
Sir Keir said he does not intend to quit and threw down the gauntlet to potential rivals to formally challenge him as Labour leader.
No MP has yet launched a formal bid to challenge him, which requires the backing of 81 colleagues or 20% of Labour MPs, according to party rules.

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.
In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.
He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.
Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.
Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.
The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.
It comes after another night of strikes between the US and Iran, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it hit two UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and targeted US facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.
The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.
Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

I'm a Sixties Scoop survivor. I have a serious story I could tell. My adoptive father was a money launderer. He abused me in almost every possible way. I say almost because I wasn't se*ually abused. However, I know many survivors were. Anyway, I wish some of these people who want to document things like this would reach out to me. I've been holding things in for decades. Things that effect me still TO THIS DAY! TO THIS DAY!!! I think a book needs to be written about it. This Sixties Scoop thing was a POLICY. Do you know what that means. It was a GOVERNMENT POLICY which means it was part of the INSTITUTIONALIZED RACISM that Canada had always implemented. A lot of these survivors went to the states which further implicates AMERICANS who ALL knew what they were doing. My adoptive father told me once because he wanted to belittle me even more that when he went to the adoption agency, they told him their plan was to take native kids away from our parents to suppress us and keep us down. I was deprived of my culture which I don't speak my language and even, my own people don't accept me. I am an outsider even among other natives. As I've said, I wish they would approach me to tell my story. I feel like I'm gonna die without ever getting my real truth out there.

As a Canadian this is heart breaking Most of us had NO IDEA of these terrible practices and how so many children were culturally obliterated. Not to mention the physical, psychological, sexual violence they experienced in many cases. To Canadian First Nation people I HEAR YOU I SEE YOU I BELIEVE YOU and I am so very very sorry for the harm my country has done to your Nation.

My name is Dae Gyung Kim. I am the head pastor
of Sarang Jeil Church in Ban Weul Dong,
Hwaseong city, Gyeongi province.
Our church is part of The General Assembly
of Presbyterian Church in Korea.
I was diagnosed with the deadly pancreatic cancer.
One morning I collapsed suddenly and was rushed
to the S Hospital in Seoul.

This was a very sad and cruel moment in our history. As a mother, I can't imagine the pain experienced by our indigenous people during that time. Let's hope going forward our government no matter what party is in power, we can do something to mitigate the pain of our past mistakes. As a Canadian, I think that is very important and necessary.
