Antarctica melting: Journey to the ‘doomsday glacier’ – BBC News
Glaciologists have described Thwaites Glacier as the “most important” glacier in the world, the “riskiest” glacier, even the “doomsday” glacier.
A team of 40 or so scientists are part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, a five-year, $50m (£38m) joint UK-US effort to understand why it is changing so rapidly.
The project represents the biggest and most complex scientific field programme in Antarctic history.
The BBC’s chief environment correspondent Justin Rowlatt went to meet the scientists behind the project.

A new personalised vaccine given in combination with a drug has stopped skin cancer returning in patients during a trial, representing a potentially watershed moment in cancer treatment. Scientists used mRNA technology, which was used for some Covid-19 vaccines.
But that technology – and vaccines more generally – have become increasingly controversial in the United States since the Covid-19 pandemic. The Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, is a vaccine sceptic.
In August 2025 cancelled $500m (£376m) in funding for mRNA vaccine research. The move impacted 22 projects being led by major pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer and Moderna, for vaccines against bird flu and other viruses, according to Kennedy’s department.
We speak to Tom Whipple, host of the BBC’s Inside Science programme, about the science of this new vaccine. And we ask how funding cuts for vaccine research could impact health outcomes not just for Americans, but for the world.

Historic first as Chinese robot beats Usain Bolt’s 100m world record at Beijing games | BBC News
A Chinese humanoid robot has run 100 metres in 9.39 seconds in a preliminary heat at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, surpassing the men’s world record time held by Jamaican sprinting great Usain Bolt.
Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, won its heat at the opening of the games’ second edition. The robot overtook smartphone maker Honor’s Lightning near the finish after falling behind early in the race. Lightning finished in 9.47 seconds, also faster than the 9.58-second record Bolt set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin.
The results marked a remarkable improvement from last year’s inaugural games, when Tiangong Ultra won the 100 metres in 21.50 seconds. Tiangong also won the world’s first humanoid robot half-marathon, held in Beijing last year.
The 100 metres is among 51 events at the games, which include football, dancing and contests to complete industrial tasks.
China is promoting humanoid robots as a strategic emerging industry, with policymakers and companies betting that advances in AI and hardware will accelerate their use in manufacturing, logistics and consumer applications.
Investor enthusiasm for the sector was underscored recently when shares in Unitree, China’s best-known humanoid robot maker, jumped more than five fold in its Shanghai trading debut, giving the company a market value of about $50 billion.
This year’s games have drawn 2,056 robots from 666 teams across 16 countries and six continents, up from 280 teams at the inaugural event.

Malting of ice is not for global warming but due to human being eagerness of fame (for these so called scientist everyone has to suffer) they went to places making passages breaking destructing the preserved ice which are meant for the balance of this universe. These glaciers that originate at lake Vostok all of which needs to melt and all will convert to oxygen not water for it is almost all made of oxygen clathrate also know as sky ice….. Covid is being triggered environmentally… in fact it’s cover for the projected fatalities as they lower the atmospheric oxygen and thin the atmosphere via subterranean detonations. They have no choice but to run this pandemic out to polar shift which they are weaponizing through geo cooling. If all of the ice in Antarctica melted it would barely effect sea levels because it is largely made up of sky ice also known as oxygen clathrate, meaning it would convert to oxygen not water.
This is the most important thing you were never taught. The berg raises as the oxygen clathrate begins to free. Next the ice berg begins to flip as it flips notice the blue ice underneath… this is sky ice / oxygen clathrate…. Next watch it disintegrate before your eyes as it turns into oxygen…. This is your polar shift replacement oxygen and the reason Earth needs to drastically warm prior to polar shift …. Otherwise all asphyxiate (which has already begun) a new ocean will flood the earth as the trapped oxygen clathrate/sky ice converts to ice 7 which expands at roughly 1000 Miles per hour, this is how all past oceans were formed. Ocean creating events are always extinction events, all of which is man made. 💥💥💥🔥🌟💥💥💥THIS IS THE SOLUTION 💥💥💥💥💥but nobody wants to face it, see it or they can’t see it but we all need to prepare for the volcanos about to explode or we NEED to make the volcanos explode to block out the sun but before we do it for the next year max 2 we take in all the animals, insects, tribes, etc….as we can, go underground for 5-10 years with as much food water freshwater and animals and everything as we can and build an underground city that is all windmills powered by the underground lakes that are everywhere we can use power off that get fresh water underground and wait it out build a fuck ton of green houses but we need to make the volcanos explode so the Ash blocks out the sun and let’s everything freeze again. This is a natural disaster that is about to happen, The volcanos in the national park down here in Yellowstone national park has been having a lot of activity in the last 10 years animals have been leaving that region by the hordes and geysers have been having way more activity as well as the dormant ones and the ground level has risen a lot as well as the temperature, we are about to face a natural disaster that Will save us in the end but we need to prepare like five years ago 👌🏻
