Young, black and more likely to die in Brazil – BBC News
In Brazil, thousands of people are killed by the police every year.
Together with a local NGO, the Brazilian Forum of Public Safety, BBC Brazil investigation set out to uncover who is most at risk of lethal police violence there.
After examining more than 1200 profiles of those killed in 2020, it found that in Rio de Janeiro state alone, 75% of all those who died were black Brazilians.
Both Ana-Paula Rocha and Rafaela Coutinho Matos lost their sons in incidents involving the police. They’ve told the BBC their stories.
In both cases, the authorities have confirmed that no one has been arrested but that an investigation is on-going.

Percentage less white peoples means less white deaths. Or poor to rich ratio. Poorer people are more likely to be caught up in crime.

A couple of years ago I was going to meet a girl in another part of Rio so I took an Uber from where I was staying in Barra. The driver went through the tolls and apparently they had an "operation" going on (police checkpoint). Me being on vacation and oblivious, I dropped my phone in the car, reached down to get it and all of a sudden I heard shouting in Portuguese. The driver wasn't saying anything but had stopped the car. Then I noticed a police coming towards the car with his rifle pointed at us. He yelled to get out the car. Though I understand/speak Portuguese I was said (in English) "I don't understand, I don't understand. I'm Americano. What happened?"
Turns out he saw me reach down and thought I was reaching for something (a gun I perhaps?) I showed him my ID and he finally let me go with these parting words – "Cuidado cara. Aqui é Rio de Janeiro" (Be careful man, this is Rio). That was pretty much my only bad encounter after more than 20 years of going there so I can't complain. However, I did think… what would have happened if I was Brazilian and not American?

I really do feel like the authorities don't investigate on the murders of these victims because where they live. More likely it's the police killing these children. Racism is everywhere. Even in the city of god.
