The town of Hanford, Washington, was the site of a World War Two-era plutonium processing operation that left it one of the most contaminated nuclear waste site in the US.

The clean-up has been under way for 25 years, but residents say they are committed to the project and are determined to pass that commitment on to their children.

The BBC’s Jane O’Brien reports.

FFS I live  the area this was filmed. The Hanford site would have been cleaned up a  long time ago if the damn anti-nukes would get out of the way. Also we had a few reactors that were more than 50% complete that were scrapped before they were completed, how stupid is that. Nuclear energy is clean, renewable and the closest thing we have to perpetual energy at the moment. Beats depending on other countries for oil. In this area we have 3 dams and that nuke reactor for power… yeah the lights almost never go out.

    Say goodnight Gracie.
Grace industries in Woburn Massachusetts pulled out of the area when cancer clusters in kids who lived near their dumping grounds grew to pandemic proportions.
As did the South Boston, Charlestown, and Everett Edison power plants that poured carcinogenic particulates into nearby neighborhood's.
The only jobs created were sellout political positions which sided with the company over community.

the site is currently being cleaned up. this is actually a Bias report the clean up is well underway by the same company who is handling the Japanese nuclear power plant. it is safe and well underway. sorry but maybe if the BBC actually reported in a fashion where both sides of a story are provided then people could make up their own minds. the clean up there currently employees well over 1000 people not just there but world wide. learn to tell the whole story not just half of one.

How prosthetics tech is training robots | BBC News

Published

Tech Now’s Paul Carter finds out how technology powering advanced prosthetics is also helping train humanoid robots.

The Ability Hand is a special piece of prosthetics technology, with two ambitions running through the same piece of hardware.

One is to give somebody their grip back. The other is to take what that person’s hand already knows – and teach it to a machine.

Signal boss Meredith Whittaker says AI ‘can always be controlled’ | BBC News

AI can always be controlled, the president of encrypted messaging app Signal has told the BBC.

Meredith Whittaker said fears that AI could become conscious and take over were “not anchored in science and evidence”, warning instead about the dangers of using the technology in military decision-making.

The former Google employee said AI could “supercharge mistakes” and reflected on her role in opposing the company’s involvement in a US military drone surveillance project.

Speaking to the BBC Global Women, Whittaker also questioned who gets to shape the future of AI, criticised the concentration of power in Silicon Valley and explained why Signal would leave a country rather than compromise its users’ privacy.

Chinese AI tool told researchers how to make bioweapons | BBC News

Published

on

Developer Moonshot is conducting an internal review after researchers were able to persuade two of its popular Kimi models to tell them how to make biological weapons and carry out assassinations.

Mindgard, which tests the security of AI systems, told the BBC it discovered in July that Kimi K2.6 and K3 Swarm could evade safety limits put in place by developers.

It arose during a process called “jailbreaking”, where researchers use a series of complex instructions to see if AI tools ignore guardrails – which Mindgard said should have stopped Kimi from discussing concerning topics.

Moonshot told the BBC it welcomed third-party input “as a key pillar for building better and safer AI”.
