An immigrant-led, worker-owned co-operative in New York City is trying to transform the gruelling job of cleaner into a path to entrepreneurship.
Brightly Cleaning is adapting to a franchise business model – similar to that which turned McDonald’s into a global behemoth – with thousands of small business owners operating under a shared brand.
The co-operative’s growing success aims to put workers’ needs at the forefront of the cleaning industry.

The jury in Russell Brand’s rape trial won’t see a TV documentary that a complainant says led her to come forward.
Judge Mr Justice Bennathan said it would be unfair to show the Channel 4 Dispatches programme because the allegations it contains have not been tested in court, but said that jurors will hear about it during the trial.
The 51-year-old actor and comedian faces seven charges – three counts of rape, three charges of sexual assault and one of indecent assault.
The allegations, made by six female complainants, span a 10-year period between 1999 and 2009. He denies the charges.

The BBC has witnessed Israeli settlers attack Palestinians and set fire to olive trees in the occupied West Bank.
Several dozen settlers dressed in black charged down a hill near an outpost – illegal under Israeli and international law – to a field where Palestinians and activists were harvesting olives. They torched about a dozen trees and hurled stones from slingshots.
Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine, who was at the scene, was taken to hospital where she told reporters she “got jumped” and described being kicked on the ground.
The UN says the past two weeks have already seen more attacks by violent Israeli settlers than during the entire harvest season last year. It says this year levels of settler violence have reached an all-time high.
The BBC’s Middle East Correspondent Lucy Williamson reports from the occupied West Bank.

I always appreciate people willing to work, especially behind the scenes. One of the best complimnts I ever received was from a behind the scenes guy who was thanking me for calling him by name and speaking kindly and with respect to him. When I started a a young man I did get my hands dirty work. I think it helps build character even for we who went into more "professinal" careers. I admire these immigrants making their mark.

In capitalism this is possible. Anyone, in any way can start a business and run it the way they prefer. Perfect system, absolutely not, can even be for the worse. In a system that is more restrictive with property rights, like communism, at least forms of socialism, running one's business if allowed to, the way the person sees fit, is much less likely, lack of freedom to, is always a minus, but might be necessary under circumstances. The form of business presented is good for now, however when time comes for hard decisions, how will it do then? What about when it is time for risk, will they? How flexible is that business? Maybe everything will work out, i am sure it will for some time, but to present it as a better model, no, it is a model, free to practice under capitalism, the plus of such a system. Everything depends, not against or for the way this business is run, but definitely not for or against capitalism, and employer and employee ownership either.
