Huge loss of stars visible in night sky due to light pollution say scientists – BBC News

Published

on

The number of stars visible with the naked eye has reduced dramatically over the last decade due to light pollution, scientists have said.

The cause is “Skyglow” from artificial lighting for city streets and buildings, and the brightness of that glow has increased every year since 2011 according to a study by the German Research Centre for Geosciences.

The affects of light pollution doesn’t just reduce our view of the stars, it has been shown to impact human health and disrupt sleep patterns of nocturnal animals too.

To add to the dismay, when we are blessed by the emergence of a full moon, it no longer captures our attention. To spend a few moments of our time and simply embrace it's beauty. Even to ponder how such a divine entity is floating above us. And that another world exists out there!

As if it took a scientist for this to become news, literally just look up once in a while. It’s a problem. No one’s going to change, even with the simple solution suggested, people don’t care their neighbours or about the planet we live on why would they care about stars millions of miles away? If knowledge solved problems there wouldn’t be any, it’s action that matters and doing the right thing is too inconvenient for us.

I have enough stars to see. In my birth country, where the population density is less, I could see all possible stars outside the city. The less amount of stars doesn't make my life worse. Only the INFLATION (not much too)

I don't know why BBC is going on about I see stars ⭐ nearly everyday sometimes at night time. Stars ⭐ live on forever and stars never die but stars ⭐ forever live because they are stars ⭐ that shine bright in night time sky. ⭐

Once people started to lose their connection to nature and stars they've been losing the connection to themselves. As above, so below. It's all connected and it's magical.

do not tell people a false narrative of cosmology and start basing your theories off of that because that makes all your theories not work because you idea of physics is not in proportion to the reality of the earth being the center and the sphere of the heavens are like a part a circuit

How this wave energy system is inspired by the human heart | BBC News

Published

Tech Now’s Adrienne Murray visited Stockholm, Sweden, to explore a wave energy technology inspired by the way the human heart pumps blood.

Swedish company CorPower has developed large yellow buoys, anchored to the seabed, which generate electricity by harnessing the movement of ocean waves.

Private baby scan studios ‘a growing concern’ – BBC News

Published

on

A BBC News investigation has uncovered failures in the diagnosis of serious medical issues during private baby scans.

More than 200 studios across the UK now sell ultrasound scans, with hundreds of thousands being carried out each year.

But the BBC has uncovered evidence of women not being told about serious conditions and abnormalities.

The Care Quality Commission says there is good quality care in the industry but it has a “growing concern”.

Weightlifting and strength exercises could help people live longer – BBC News

Published

on

Activities which strengthen the muscles – like weightlifting – should be part of an older person’s weekly exercise routine, a study suggests.

People doing both aerobic and muscle exercises were more likely to live longer than those who did just one or the other, US researchers found.

But you don’t have to go to the gym – carrying heavy shopping bags, digging in the garden and pilates all count.
