Thousands of cats die from Covid strain in Cyprus – BBC News
A deadly Covid virus has killed thousands of cats in Cyprus.
The disease, called Feline Infectious Peritonitis, or FIP, is known as the feline coronavirus.
The government is allowing vets to use anti-Covid pills to treat the animals.
The Veterinarians Association said the outbreak began in January and spread across the country within a few months.
FIP is not related to Covid-19 and cannot be contracted by humans.

Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught out by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.

I live in China. I have two cats and a cat rescue team. In China, cats with coronavirus or FIPV have received effective treatment, including my cat recovered from FIPV.

There is a vaccine, we in Russia may have our cats vaccinated from FIP which is contagious and almost fatal. However, there is cure, which is expensive and not 100% effective. If the virus is spread among stray cats, Cypriots should vaccinate their own cats.

How terrible, I had a cat who died of this. The vet kept draining fluid over and over again, but he didn’t make it. He kept getting outside and I’m sure he picked it up from other cats. Nearly every cat was indoor/outdoor then, early 80s, we didn’t understand the high risks to them. Keeping cats indoors double their life expectancy, we now know. A few years ago, towards the end of a 20-year drought, coyotes started coming down from the hills in search of water and food. Every last outdoor cat disappeared in a week or two, only indoor cats survived.
