Israel evacuating communities along Lebanon border – BBC News
Israel has activated a plan to evacuate residents of 28 villages within 2 km (1 mile) of the Lebanese border, the military has said.
The border has been deemed unsafe by the Israeli government because, in addition to Hamas in Gaza, Israel is also fighting Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon which is committed to Israel’s destruction.
Like Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah has been designated a terror organisation by the UK, US and other countries.
One Israeli civilian was killed in a Hezbollah missile attack on a village on Sunday, and Israel has carried out overnight strikes on Lebanon.

Iceland has voted against resuming membership talks with the European Union, public broadcaster RUV has reported, with just one constituency’s votes left to count.
It reported that 52.5% of the 188,496 votes so far counted had rejected the government’s proposal, while 47.5% had said yes. Some 9,500 votes separated them.
Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir’s centre-left government promised to hold a referendum by 2027, but brought it forward because of international tensions, including US President Donald Trump’s threats against Greenland.

The US military has selected around 2,000 soldiers for possible deployment to assist Israel in anticipation of a ground invasion of Gaza, according to sources in the defense sector who spoke with the Wall Street Journal. According to officials, the troops have been assigned non-combat roles such as advising and providing medical assistance, and they represent various branches of the US armed services. There are reportedly no plans to deploy infantry troops at this time.
The selected US troops are currently stationed in different locations, both within the Middle East and outside, including Europe, according to WSJ sources. The exact conditions for their potential deployment and their eventual destination remain uncertain
