Is the UK’s illegal migrant crackdown working? – BBC Newsnight

Published

on

The UK government has previously claimed some success in getting the numbers of illegal migrants down, but what headway, if any, have they made on sorting out what they’ve termed a “broken” asylum system?

More than 1,400 people have been detected crossing the English channel in a period of four days.

The Illegal Migration Bill, which aims to deport those arriving in the UK without permission, breaches a “number of the UK’s human rights obligations”, according to MPs and peers.

Newsnight’s Anna Collinson reports.

People need to know, if you come here illegally, you will be sent away. It's our only defense. If we don't do this, you won't recognise this country in 30 years

Lmao no racism or negativity at all but how can the prime minister and everyone have a problem with migrants when that is exactly what he is! He is not British! His grandfather came here the same way many moons ago! If your gonna allow non British people to come here because they have a job lined up or because of any reason then everyone should! All or nothing!

I hope these hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants will eventually be deported. I can’t believe they are going to be allowed to stay in this country. Not even with this government. I don’t give a toss where they are deported as long as they are out of this country.

Millions of migrants are lining up all across North Africa and elsewhere with millions more to follow awaiting their chance to cross the Mediterranean to Europe then most of them heading to Northern France to invade the UK. Sunak needs to stop piddling around with courts lawyers etc and turn these boats around now using our armed forces to do it.

British people have no grounds for complaints. Their country, i.e. them, invaded, conquered, subjugated, dominated and exploited vast sections of the globe up until the recent past, as far as historical past goes. It should come as no surprise that many countries are dirt poor and their citizens will risk life and limb to get to the UK to exploit their systems

We need ID CARDS which should have both our National Insurance number and National Health number included. Most of Europe operates like this. Why isn’t the Government doing this? Why isn’t the media covering this solution?

  26. @razor2ts

    December 31, 2023 at 2:37 pm

There's been no crackdown at all, £8,000 000+ a day to house Illegals! The tory's have sold the UK out! Time for a massive change in our government! Labour can't be trusted! Reform has my vote in the next election! It's an easy choice! The only thing that will stop this influx of boats atm is our good old British winter weather!

  27. @chrisclarke4541

    December 31, 2023 at 2:37 pm

If the Tories really want to win the next general election. they must stop all this fiddle faddling with courts. judges. lawyers bleeding hearts and do-gooders and take action now to turn these boats around and dump the migrants back in France. I might just vote for them then !!!

Sunak needs to declare a state of emergency which could override all court decisions and start sending migrants to Rwanda now as well as turning boats around and escorting them back to France with or without French agreement. If the French could agree to it. we could help them to prevent migrants entering France from Italy. Germany etc .

  35. @joelaw5207

    December 31, 2023 at 2:37 pm

This refusal to send them back highlights the idiots in power, who can't agree weather it's day or night. We have charities acting like traitors to this mass invasion.
We must Close Europe's borders. Detain & Deport. Not feed & shelter Don't encourage this infestation, if you feed rats more & more will come
These unskilled, uneducated, 3rd world bogus asylum beggars need to be brought back to africa until they get the message : we don't want you, and if you come we will deport you

  36. @chrisclarke4541

    December 31, 2023 at 2:37 pm

I've heard that bogus asylum seekers having conned the authorities into granting them leave to remain are destitute and living rough. Boo hoo .isn't it terrible. Here's a solution. go up to Eastern England and work you're arses off cutting cabbages. digging potatoes. picking fruit etc and pay back some of the money you have cost taxpayers.

  37. @SLEEPYSID99

    December 31, 2023 at 2:37 pm

Apparently the exclusiiin zone is 16miles around the UK 🇬🇧 and as France is only 26miles from dover to Calais then our exclusion zones cross therefore there's NO exclusion zone but if you hitch a migrant biat and tow it out of the exclusiiin zone then there are no laws and therefore you may sink the boats and shoot to kill

This latest bill of 8 million pounds a day dumped onto taxpayers will look like pocket money unless action is taken immediately. We cannot afford to waste time waiting for court decisions. ACTION NOW !!!!!!

  42. @hanndonfield91

    December 31, 2023 at 2:37 pm

The BBC is biased not fit for purpose and should be defended immediately, they are strongly pro immigration, and currently the proposal to just let everyone in does not work!!!!!

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
